Program Goal: “effectively and noticeably reduce cigarette litter in communities around our country” Phases of the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program: 2002 conduct cigarette litter research through publications review and identification of best practices 2003 conduct field-testing in three U.S. cities 2004 expand field-testing research in nine U.S. cities 2005 launch Cigarette Litter Prevention Campaign Program Development with Corporate Partner: This program’s development was possible due to the 50 year relationship of Keep America Beautiful Inc and Philip Morris USA and their multi-year grant support demonstrating our shared goals on this issue. Keep America Beautiful’s definition of cigarette litter: “ … all cigarettes including partially smoked cigarettes, cigarette butts, lighting materials such as matches and lighters as well as the packaging itself” which has been dropped to the ground and not in the proper receptacle. Did you know … 18% of all litter dropped to the ground is washed into streams, rivers, lakes and the ocean by storm water runoff. You may know … reports from the Keep America Beautiful Network of Affiliates and other stakeholders identify cigarette litter as the most littered item in our country.
