The Team Our aim: “ To record and analyse the Human Impact on the Lake District. ” –Litter –Scenery –Habitats –Footpath Erosion Expedition Review Introduction

Litter
4
Why is there litter? –Irresponsible hikers –No litter bins Effect of litter: –Might choke the ‘I’m- confused-whether-that’s- food-or-litter’ livestock –Spoils the scenery –Endanger other hikers. The litter might cause them to slip down while walking.

Footpath Erosion
25
12 million people visit the Lake District every year High level of use puts pressure on footpaths which causes erosion Footpath erosion = loss or substantial alteration of soil structure and vegetation
26
Footpath erosion can result in: –Unsightly paths –Difficult walking, sometimes even dangerous –Damage to farmers ’ land –Habitat loss –Damage to natural and historical qualities of the area Footpath Erosion
27
Factors affecting the susceptibility of a path to erosion include: –Level of use –Popularity of route –Proximity of facilities –Type of activity undertaken. Taking these factors into account, what did we discover during our expedition? Footpath Erosion
28
Popular path: easy parking facilities in Martindale or Sandwick and short, accessible and attractive walks along the lake increases number of walkers who use the path, increasing pressure and likelihood for erosion to occur Cyclists: we saw a number of people on bikes, swerving rocks or poor steering could cause footpaths to slip like this Fallen section of footpath found on a path around Ullswater Lake
