 In small groups discuss the advantages and disadvantages of living in the types of environments you have seen in the previous slides.  Do any of the pictures remind you of the environment you live in?  Discuss within your group what would your ideal environment look like?

 Task 2  Discuss types of things would you consider to be a problem in our Environment and what makes it a less enjoyable place to live.

 Dog Fouling  Fly Posting  Fly Tipping  Graffiti  Gum  Litter  Abandoned Cars  Waste

 In 2010 the UK dog population was estimated to be 8 million, with dogs producing approximately 1,000 tonnes of excrement each day.  Dog fouling is not only unpleasant it is dangerous. The biggest threat to public health from dog excrement is toxocariasis.

Toxocariasis is an infection of the roundworm toxocara canis. The eggs of the parasite can be found in soil or sand contaminated with faeces and if swallowed, result in infection that lasts between six and 24 months. Symptoms include eye disorders, vague ache, dizziness, nausea, asthma and, in extremely rare cases, seizures/fits.

 If you are with someone you know and they allow their dog to foul you may feel safe telling them that they shouldn’t.  However, if you do not know the person it is important not to confront them if you think that your personal safety might be at risk. Dog wardens are empowered and trained to deal with offenders

 Graffiti is any illegal marking to walls and other surfaces. It covers a wide variety of forms including ‘masterpieces’, ‘tags’, juvenile scribbles, scratchings and etchings.  The most common are juvenile scribbles which are responsible for most of the graffiti on our streets and in our school. This type of graffiti can often be racist and offensive in nature.

 If you want to report graffiti in your local area you should firstly contact your local council and tell them about the problem.  In School report it to a member of staff who will let site staff know to get it removed

 Chewing gum is the most difficult type of litter to deal with. Its stickiness means normal cleaning methods like street sweeping and litter picking don’t work. More extreme methods like jet washing and steam cleaning have to be used to remove it – which cost a lot of money

 When carelessly discarded chewing gum becomes trodden into our streets and pavements it is extremely difficult and costly to remove.  The average clean up of gum from a town centre costs £20,000 and this has to be carried out a number of times a year.

 There is always an ongoing problem of litter and the impact that it has on our communities and local areas. Over 30 million tonnes of litter are collected from our streets every year and it costs council tax payers £885 million a year to clean the streets of England.

 Anyone that drops litter in a public place is committing a crime and they can be fined between £50 - £80.  2.25 million pieces of litter are dropped in the UK every day  48% of the population admit to dropping litter  People who are satisfied with how their area looks, are significantly more likely to be satisfied with how safe they feel in their area

 If you are with someone you know and they drop litter you may feel safe telling them that they shouldn’t.  However, if you see someone dropping litter that you don’t know it is important not to confront them if you think that your personal safety might be at risk.

Task 3 Littered brand % of all litter  Cadbury 8%  Coca-Cola 8%  Walkers 6%  Mars 6%  McDonald's 4%

 Most members of the Ninestiles School community care about the environment we work and study in. Task 4  Discuss in small groups what measures are currently in place to make sure our environment is clean and safe?  Discuss in the same groups what more could be done?  What other issues could the problem of litter bring to our School Environment?  Feed back to the rest of your tutor group.

 Can you identify where on the school site this litter is?

 Can you identify the location of these litter bins around school?
