3. Fire Safety Always place candles in holders that will not tip. Be sure candles are nowhere near curtains and draperies. Extinguish all candles before leaving your home or going to sleep. Warn children about the dangers of candles, matches and other flames.

4. Fireplaces Don’t use your fireplace to burn wrapping materials – they may create toxic fumes or even a flash fire. Use kindling and wooden matches to light fires – not flammable liquids. Always use a fire screen. Don’t close the chimney flue until you’re sure the fire is completely out.

5. Smoke Detectors and Fire Extinguishers A smoke detector should be installed on each floor of your home. Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless and lethal. A detector can save lives. Be sure you have a working fire extinguisher on hand and inspect it regularly.

6. Holiday Food Preparation Keep food, utensils, preparation surfaces and hands clean. Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. After the meal, refrigerate the food as soon as possible. Stuff your turkey just before cooking to avoid spoilage.

7. Holiday Traveling Don’t overload your car or obstruct your view with suitcases and packages. Avoid eating a heavy meal before leaving for a trip – this will help you stay more alert. Follow other vehicles at a safe distance.

8. Holiday Traveling When traveling in winter weather, take a “survival” kit with first-aid supplies, blankets, flash light and batteries, shovel and quick-energy foods. It’s a good idea to take a bag of salt, sand or cat litter to use for traction if stuck in ice or snow. Always buckle up!

9. Avoid Holiday Stress Don’t blow your budget! Decide how much you can spend and stick to it. Budget time wisely, too. Don’t over commit free time. Start planning your gift list early to avoid last-minute panic. Don’t try to do it all yourself.
