Vision for Cannelton Newly completed Highway 66 and sidewalk reconstruction by Indiana Dept. Of Transportation New 1/3 mile River Trail walkway along Ohio River behind the Ohio River Floodwall, connecting new sidewalks and River Trail to other Perry County Greenway trails New sidewalks throughout town through two Safe Routes to Schools Grants Downtown Revitalization of lighting, curbs, Gazebo Park, floodwall mural

Vision for Cannelton… continued Improve the health of community by providing more safe walkways through busy town that borders Highway 66 and the Ohio River Flood wall protects us yet separates us from the River - how do we reconnect with our roots? Reconnect community with its roots along the Ohio River by providing more recreational access along river Add elements that will attract visitors to this charming town

Cannelton River Trail Project Partnership between: Perry Count Greenway Initiative - Grant writer, Project Manager and partial funder Cannelton Foundation - Lead Organization and grant match fundraiser City of Cannelton - Property owner responsible for right of ways and future maintenance & major funder Cannelton Greenway Committee - volunteers from each organization who designed walkway with help of local engineer

Cannelton River Trail Funding Cannelton Foundation sought $50,000 match funding donations from: Local businesses i.e. banks, hospital, manufacturers, etc. City of Cannelton Perry County Convention & Visitors Bureau Perry County Greenway Initiative Local civic organizations Local family foundations Individuals who had previously supported other Perry County Greenway trails

Cannelton River Trail Progress Steps taken after Place-Based Grant Awarded early-May 2012: Engineering firms bid on 1,770 linear feet (1/3 mile) project - local firm was chosen May 8 Engineer became project manager Hired surveyor - Survey completed June 1 Completed Drawings - June 26 Met with adjacent landowner and Perry County Port Authority to work out land use agreement with City of Cannelton

Cannelton River Trail Progress Continued…. Engineer began seeking permits/approval from: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (re: floodwall proximity)- “Letter of No Objection” received July 25 Department of Natural Resources (re: riverside location) – no permit needed Indiana Dept. Of Environmental Management (re: Rule 5) - no permit needed

Cannelton River Trail Progress Continued…. Engineer sought bids from contractors July 30 Bids received on Aug. 15 - Concrete walkway bid was accepted 1 st meeting with contractor Aug. 17 Work began August 20 Completed Oct. 9 River Trail Dedicated Oct. 12 Cannelton’s 175 th Anniversary Oct. 11 - 14

Cannelton River Trail - Challenges Rural community - low number of engineers and contractors available locally Goal of completing trail before 175 th Anniversary Celebration in less than six months Floodwall proximity and permits needed to construct walkway in a floodway Limited financial resources in community with United States in beginning stage of economic recovery

Cannelton River Trail - Successes Cannelton Foundation (501 c 3) took Lead Organization role which helped avoid red tape required of governmental entities Highly qualified engineer who recently relocated to Tell City, his hometown Permitting process went through without any problems Financial support was strong from local Greenway Initiative, CVB, and City of Cannelton

Cannelton River Trail - Successes Continued… Local contractor won bid and moved very quickly to begin and complete project Engineer took on Project Manager position and did an excellent job Strong leadership from local volunteers and government leaders from Cannelton Completed project within budget of $100,000

Cannelton River Trail - Successes Waupaca Foundry, located in Perry County, designed and donated beautiful iron bench ends to Cannelton Foundation. Bench ends are assembled and sold to help meet final grant match. Benches will also be placed along Cannelton River Trail. Cannelton Park Bench - $350 New Community Partnership

Cannelton River Trail Connectivity The Perry County Greenway currently has the following trails: Windy Creek Trail in Tell City Tell City River Walk Tell City Bike Lanes William Tell Elementary School Trail Cannelton River Trail Future plans include connecting Tell City River Walk to Cannelton River Trail via River Road upgrade project that will be constructed by a collaboration between the governmental bodies of Perry County, Cannelton, Tell City and the Perry County Port Authority

Perry County Greenway Master Plan Tell City Troy Cannelton Walking/Cycling Trails linking towns along the Ohio River and hiking trails within the Hoosier National Forest and Perry Central area
