5. 1.Using the Coarse Adj. Knob, roll the stage all the way to the bottom 2.Place the Slide on the Microscope 3.Use Stage Clips to secure the slide 4.Click Nosepiece to the scanning (shortest) objective 5.Look into the Eyepieces 6.Use the Coarse Focus to find the specimen 7.Fine tune your field of vision with the fine adjustment knob

6. Always start with the Scanning Objective –Move the slide around until you spot what you are looking for, it maybe small but you may not find it without this step –Focus using 1 st the coarse adjustment knob, then the fine. Switch to the Low Power Objective –Again refocus, 1 st the coarse then the fine Now to the High Power Objective…follow these rules…

7. Click the nosepiece to the high-power (longest) objective Do NOT use the Coarse Adjustment Knob Use the Fine Adjustment Knob to bring the slide into focus

8. USE PENCIL –they can be erased & used to shade LABEL YOUR DRAWINGS –with clear and proper labels –outside the circle –include: specimen name total magnification Draw to scale –If the specimen fills your field of view your drawing should reflect that

9. 1.Gather a thin slice/piece of your specimen. - If it is too thick, the cover slip will wobble, & you’ll not be able to use high-power to view it 2.Place one drop of water directly over the specimen -Too much = messy & your specimen might float away 3.Place the cover slip at ~45° angle with one edge touching the side of the water drop 4.Slowly & Gently let go so that the cover slip covers the specimen

10. 1.Place ONE drop of stain (methylene blue, iodine, etc.) at the edge of the cover slip. 2.Place the flat edge of a paper towel piece on the opposite side of the cover slip. -The paper towel will draw the water out from under the cover slip and the cohesion of water will draw the stain under 3.As soon as the stain has covered the area containing the specimen, you are finished. 4.Wipe off the excess stain with a paper towel, carefully.

11. 1.Remove all slides from microscope. 2.Store microscope with the scanning objective in place. 3.Wrap cord and cover microscope neatly and put in the correct cabinet. 4.Wash slides in the sinks and dry them CAREFULLY, put them in the designated place so they can be used later. 5.Put the cover slips in the “dirty” container or discard in the broken glass container if they are damaged.

12. Image is too dark! –Adjust the diaphragm located below the stage and make sure the light is on (is the microscope plugged in?) There’s a Spot and it DOESN’T move! –A lens is dirty. Use lens paper and clean both the eye piece and objective. I can’t see anything under high-power! –Remember, you MUST use the steps to focusing… first scanning, then low, then high. Only half of my field of view is lit, it’s like there’s a ½ moon in there! –Most likely your objective is not fully clicked into place.
