Active Listening

Tapescript Exercise 1 Directions: Karen is complaining to Hilary about the amount of extra work she does. As you listen, fill in the table below with the specific information about the frequency of her office routines. occasionally ___________________ normally once a day ___________________ sometimes ___________________ often ___________________ rarely ___________________

返回 (H—Hilary, K—Karen) H: Karen, have you got a few minutes? I’d like to have a word with you. K: Yes, of course, Hilary. H: I’ve heard that you have been complaining a bit about the extra work you are expected to do. So I thought we could perhaps discuss it and see if we can sort it out. Is that OK? K: Yes, it’s a good idea. H: OK, Karen, can you tell me what your problems are? K: Well, it’s just that I can’t manage to get through all my marketing work. I just seem to have too many other things to do. TAPESCRIPT

返回 H: Go on. K: Well, first I often have to type letters for the departmental managers. H: You mean outside marketing? K: Yes, for Mr. Ford, when Cathy and Sally are too busy. H: I see. K: And then I sometimes have to type up minutes of meetings, which isn’t really my job at all. H: No, that’s not your job. Anything else?

TAPESCRIPT 返回 K: Well, then there’s the post. Occasionally I’m asked to sort through it. H: Do you ever have to distribute it? K: No, rarely. Helen does that normally. H: And how about dictation? K: Well, that’s normally once a day, but that’s not too bad because it’s usually in marketing so I don’t mind. It’s really all the other jobs that I get. H: I see, so the problems are mainly the letters — and typing the minutes. K: Yes, I suppose so.

Active Listening Exercise 2 Directions: Listen to the dialogue again and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F). 1. Hilary wants to have a talk in Karen’s office because she wants to keep it more private. 2. The purpose of the talk is to blame Karen for her work. 3. Karen often types letters for Mr. Ford. 4. Cathy and Sally are both lazy employees. 5. Typing up minutes of meetings is Karen’s job. 6. Karen is the secretary of Marketing Department. 7. It’s Helen’s job to distribute the post. 8. Karen has to distribute mails every day. 9. The problems are mainly the letters — and typing the minutes. 10. How to solve the problem is not mentioned. T( ) F T F T F T T T F

Exercise 1 Directions: Hans gives a few more details about his working week. Listen to the dialogue and tick (√) Hans’s responsibilities. Tapescript √ √ √ √ √ √

返回 (J—John, H—Hans) J: Can I ask you, please, just what your week’s work is like? H: First, Monday, I start to check all the balances in different currencies we have abroad, in different banks. Then we put them together on a list for a liquidity meeting. Then I meet people from the Finance Department and discuss these figures. Then we talk a little bit about the economic situation in the world. J: Are there any large differences in the exchange rates over the weekend? H: Yeah. One thing happens every week, late on Fridays in the United States, when we are closed here in Europe, and that’s the money supply figures. They present every Friday afternoon. TAPESCRIPT

返回 TAPESCRIPT J: Mmm. H: And the Asian market starts on Monday, six hours before we start here in Europe, and they look at these money supply figures, and see if they’ll buy dollars or sell dollars. And then we start up in Europe about nine o’clock on Mondays. First, we check on the Asian market, and perhaps the movement of currency will continue here in Europe. It’s not certain, but mostly it’s the same tendency in Europe as in Asia. And when we close up here in Europe, about five o’clock in the evening, Americans have come in — about three o’clock our time. And it’s twenty-four hours’ work all over the world. J: OK. Well, Hans, thanks very much indeed. H: You’re welcome.

Additional Listening

Exercise 1 Directions: The following sentences are not arranged in the same order as presented in the passage. Listen to the passage once and rearrange them. 1. Get back before my children come home. 2. At my home office I connect to Europe and the US. 3. I have video conferences with other parts of Asia. 4. I take my three children to school. 5. Think about what we need to do to support the team in China. Tapescript →→→→→→→→ 4 ( ) 3 5 1 2

返回 It starts early in the morning at my home office with connection to the US as it’s their early evening. I take my three children to school, then I sit with my blackberry in the car for an hour, hour-and-a-half, commuting with my driver, then it’s into the office for mostly either video conferences with other parts of Asia, or face-to-face with the working team here. I’m pretty hands- on at the moment because we’re building from the start, so I’d say between 9:30 and 6:00 it’s very focused on what we need to do to support the team in China, or that be setting up the IT systems, or that be dealer relationships, whether that be product offer — it’s pretty widespread at the moment. TAPESCRIPT

返回 TAPESCRIPT What I’m trying to do now is (1) share my knowledge and get momentum (2) round subject areas across the business. It’s very, very (3) diverse, and it’s a lot of time spent with (4) thinking about our offer, thinking about our (5) promotion, thinking about our relationship with the architecture and (6) design community. It’s about (7) sharing and learning in equal measure. I attempt to get home before my children go to bed and then the evening (8) shift starts with Europe and then the US connection. (9) The importance of a home office and my blackberry is huge. The important thing is knowing when to put it down and shut it off. (10) I have a rule that at 9:00 p.m. it goes off, regardless.

Additional Listening Directions: Listen to a paragraph taken from the passage three times and write down the missing words or sentences. What I’m trying to do now is (1) my knowledge and get momentum (2) subject areas across the business. It’s very, very (3), and it’s a lot of time spent with (4) about our offer, thinking about our (5), thinking about our relationship with the architecture and (6) community. It’s about (7) and learning in equal measure. I attempt to get home before my children go to bed and then the evening (8) starts with Europe and then the US connection. (9). The important thing is knowing when to put it down and shut it off. (10) share _______ diverse _________ Exercise 2 round ________ thinking _________ promotion ___________ design ________ sharing _________ The importance of a home office and my blackberry is huge ________________ ______________________________________ shift ________ I have a rule that at 9:00 p.m. it goes off, regardless ____________________________________________.
