1 Vocabulary and Concept Development EDI Standard: 1.4 Students will identify common roots and affixes derived from Greek and Latin and use this knowledge to analyze the meaning of complex words (e.g., international).

2 Learning Objective I will know common roots derived from Greek and Latin and use this knowledge to analyze the meaning of complex words.

3 Activating Prior Knowledge Have you heard the word fraction? The root frac means “break.” Can you see the root rupt in interrupt? The root rupt means “break or burst.” Can you see the root frag in the Spanish word “fragmento” or in the English word fragment?

4 Concept Development Root : The fundamental element of a word or form, exclusive of all affixes and inflectional phonetic changes. Root: The root is the part of the word that contains the basic meaning.

5 Concept Development frac or frag : From the Latin word fractus / fragere meaning “to crack or to break.” rupt : From the Latin word rumpere meaning “to crack or to burst.” frac or frag: Latin root meaning “break.” rupt: Latin root meaning “burst.”

18 Extension One of the key words in this lesson is fragment. It has two parts: the root frag (break) and the suffix –ment. Ment can be used as a suffix on a complete word as well as on a root.
