The First Epistle of Peter January 18, 2015 Bob Eckel 1 “I Peter 1:6-9, The Joy of Our Salvation Part 1” The theme of I Pet 1:1-2:10 is salvation I Peter 1:6 - In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, –In what are they greatly rejoicing? Their salvation and/or hope, and if hope what hope? –But what’s occurring now? for a season - a short time, temporary. –II Cor 4:17 - For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, if need be – hypothetical or affirmative? –Wuest says hypothetical, McCalley necessity.

The First Epistle of Peter January 18, 2015 Bob Eckel 2 “I Peter 1:6-9, The Joy of Our Salvation Part 1” They have been grieved - in heaviness (aorist passive) by various trials (temptations) –What kind of trials? »The Greek term here is peirasmos – not the inner wrestling with evil inclination, but undeserved sufferings from outside the person. »II Cor 4:8-10 - We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed—always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. –Our response »II Cor 6:10 - As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things. »Also I Pet 4:12,13; James 1:2,3 I Peter 1:7 - that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, –This is a great verse, why?

The First Epistle of Peter January 18, 2015 Bob Eckel 3 “I Peter 1:6-9, The Joy of Our Salvation Part 1” –Introduced by ‘that’, why that? A connective to denote the foundation of what follows! –What does the genuineness (dokimion) of our faith mean? Tested (proven) vs. untested (unproven) faith, as if by fire. –An example of untested faith in Peter. Luke 22:31 - And the Lord said,“Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. “But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.” But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.” –And Peter’s tested faith is repeatedly evidenced in Acts of the Apostles and by his epistles isn’t it! –being much more precious than gold that perishes Gold is man’s most precious and valuable object – earthly. Faith is God’s most precious and valuable object – heavenly. –Faith is so much more precious than gold because it is unperishable, and tested by fire.

The First Epistle of Peter January 18, 2015 Bob Eckel 4 “I Peter 1:6-9, The Joy of Our Salvation Part 1” –I Pet 1:14 - Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; –The result – that it may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, In particular glory, which eternally identifies the believer with the Lord Jesus Christ. revelation or appearing of the Lord Jesus Christ? –Titus 2:13 - Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ; –The Rapture but why delayed until then? »Is our life not a revelation too? I Pet 1:8 - whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, –From whence does our love stem?

The First Epistle of Peter January 18, 2015 Bob Eckel 5 “I Peter 1:6-9, The Joy of Our Salvation Part 1” –Rom 5:5 - Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. –Remember, the believers he is addressing have not seen the Lord Jesus Christ, but Peter has. I John 1:1,2 - That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us. –And today, we do not see Him by believing, and in the Word of God. II Cor 5:16 - Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. John 20:29 - Jesus said to him, “Thomas because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The First Epistle of Peter January 18, 2015 Bob Eckel 6 “I Peter 1:6-9, The Joy of Our Salvation Part 1” –you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, This is so uplifting and points to our future with Him!. I John 3:2 - Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. –‘The overall result is an impact on our attitude’ – McCalley. I Pet 1:9 - receiving the end of your faith - the salvation of your souls. –Receiving (carrying off) the end of our faith – the ultimate of our faith is being in His very presence. That they (we) would surely obtain. 1 Pet 5:4 - and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. –Souls pertain to total persons now earthly bodies. And remember even now for me to live is Christ and die is gain!
