The Sun
2
Sun A small star About 5 billion years old (should last 5 more) Composed of 75% hydrogen and 25% helium All elements in plasma phase ( hotter state than gas) Energy comes from a Nuclear Fusion Reaction
3
Nuclear Fusion Reaction Joining two hydrogen to create helium. This is a nuclear reaction, but not the type we see in power plants and bombs. That would be fission. Fusion = merge Fission = split

Layers of the Sun Inside Core – centre (fusion takes place here) Middle – Radiation zone than convection zone. Photosphere – cooler surface (5500°C), sunspots Surface storms cause problems on Earth. Outside Chromosphere – inner atmosphere. Parts flare out (solar flare) into corona. Bigger eruptions of gases (solar prominence) Corona – hotter outer atmosphere (1 million °C) Particles blow out (solar winds) near poles.
