MOUNTAIN RANGES Cordilleras About one half of the continental USA is occupied (zaujímá) by the Cordilleras in the west. the Rocky Mountains They are divided into several parts, for example the Rocky Mountains (SKALNATÉ HORY). The Rocky Mountains form a large portion of the American Western, entering from Canada and stretching nearly to Mexico. The Cascade Range The Cascade Range (Kaskádové pohoří) is formed by volcanic mountains. Sierra Nevada The Sierra Nevada – there is the highest mountain of the continental USA Mt. Whitney (4418 m). There is also the national park Yosemite.

MOUNTAIN RANGES the Great Basin Death valley the Colorado Plateau Grand Canyon On the right of Sierra Nevada there is the Great Basin (VELKÁ PÁNEV) with Death valley (Údolí smrti) lying 85 meters below sea level. Below the Great Basin there is the Colorado Plateau (Kolorádská planina) with Grand Canyon, which is 1800 m deep and 350 km long. the Pacific Coast Range The highest peak of the USAAlaska Range Mt. McKinley Along the coast there is the Pacific Coast Range (POBŘEŽNÍ PÁSMO), which is formed by many of low mountain ranges. The highest peak of the USA is in Alaska, in Alaska Range – the mountain is Mt. McKinley (6 194 m). the Appalachian Mountains On the eastern coast there are the Appalachian Mountains. They separate the Eastern seacoast (Pobřežní nížina) from the Great Lakes and the Mississippi plain.

USA – geography, people and nationalities, political system 4. RIVERS the Mississippithe Mississippi Plain the Mexico Bay the Ohio Riverthe Missouri River, the Arkansas River, the Red River. The biggest and longest river in Northern America is the Mississippi and it flows across the Mississippi Plain (NÍŽINA) and it flows into the Mexico Bay. Many rivers flow into the Mississipy River, as the Ohio River, the Missouri River, the Arkansas River, the Red River. the Brazos River, the Rio Grande River Colorado Riverthe Columbia River the St. Lawrence River Yukon River Other big rivers are: in the south the Brazos River, the Rio Grande River, which forms the border with Mexico and the Colorado River. In the west there are the Columbia River.In the north there is the St. Lawrence River, which forms the border with Canada. In Alaska there is the big Yukon River.

Four of them forming part of the border with Canada. Niagara FallsNiagara Falls are on the US-Canadian border and it’s between Lake Erie and lake Ontario.

The legislative powerCongress the Capital The legislative power is made up of Congress (= CZ parlament). Its seat is in the Capital (= famous building in Washington). The Congress consists of two parts: House of Representative a) House of Representative – It is composed of 435 Representatives. The number of representatives for each state depends on population of each state. They are elected for tow-years term. Senate b) Senate has 100 senators, 2 senators from each state.

Presidential system White House Presidential system – there is no prime minister. Presidential election are held very regularly – always in November, once every 4 years and may serve maximum of 2 four-year terms in office. The seat of the president is in White House. The Pentagon The Pentagon is the seat of the Department of Defense. Democratic and Republican the governor Today the major parties are Democratic and Republican. Head of each state is the governor.
