AI3 Indonesia Activity Report AI3@ITB.ac.id
3
Focus zExisting Implemented Infrastructure. zExperience in Building an AII. zLow Cost Technology To Educate Indonesia. Low cost is the real challenge
4
Our situation zDevelop by University zImplemented & Run by Education Sector zThanks to AI3, WIDE, JCSAT without whom all of these activities never exists!
5
Outline zHistorical Perspective zCurrent Infrastructure. zBrief overview on our research results in: yphysical layer. yNetwork layer. yApplication layer.
6
Experience in Internet building zJanuary 1993 - Suryono (Texas) install a packet radio 1200bps to LAPAN. zLAPAN 1200bps to BPPT & Internet 64Kbps. z286 PC as gateway! to connect the whole ITB campus. zSoftware NOS (running on DOS) as gateway.
7
Indonesia Topology Jan.1993 Amateur Packet Radio AX.25 at 1200bps PC Gateway 286! Starts from simple equipment We grow the community
8
ITB in 1995 zTelkom Leased Line at 14.4Kbps zRISTI-Telkom to BPPT 64Kbps. zITB uses FreeBSD (UNIX) as Router & Server. zFor the first time ITB sees Web in Internet. zITB learns to build a campus network (how to handle the lightning).
9
Typical ITB Campus Net
10
ITB Today.... zT1 Satelite link to Japan. z2Mbps link to Indonesia IX. zVSAT TDMA & SCPC to various universities. z4Mbps Uwave Jakarta-Bandung. z128 Kbps to Jakarta, Surabaya & Malang. zWaveLAN 2Mbps for Metropolitan Area Network (MAN).

Key to Success Human Resource Development! Self-financing! Community-base development. The more people the lower the cost Involving students in the process! Gives incentives for education!
16
National Policy / Activities zAI3 Indonesia has been connecting 27+ educational institutions to Internet. zAI3 Indonesia is becoming a test bed for Indonesia AII. zAI3 Indonesia actives at National NII policy level at http://n21.ac-id.net/
17
Results in Physical Layer zHomebrew 2Mbps CDMA. zVSAT TDMA vs. SCPC Network. zLow Cost Access for Schools. zInternet Access for Amateur Radio
18
VSAT TDMA vs. SCPC zVSAT TDMA 128Kbps Outbound zVSAT TDMA 64Kbps Inbound zVSAT TDMA is not suitable for Internet application (especially Web). zTune TDM for 40 byte (originally 256byte packet). zMigrate to VSAT SCPC (min) 19.2Kbps.
19
Homebrew 2Mbps CDMA zUses Lucent CDMA 2Mbps card 915MHz 250mW. zRun on FreeBSD. zHomebrew antenna (cost ~US$150). zMax. distance 15km (use PA for more). zMost of our high speed MAN using this technology.
21
Consequences CDMA 2Mbps zbypassing local line. zWe promote different alternative for building high speed network.
22
Homebrew 64-256Kbps packet radio zWe are prototyping 64-256Kbps packet radio network in the lab by adnan@itb.ac.id. zAX.25 link layer protocol is used. zGMSK MX 589 one chip modem is used. zWe drive the modem via parallel port. zMMIC Minicircuit is being build for transverter.

Exotick: A Single-User Network Operating System Based By Joko Yuliantoro Computer Network Research Group ITB
38
Traditional Kernel Design zFull Hardware Abstraction. zCentralized Resource Management. zProtection Mechanism / Multiplexing Raw Hardware.
39
Hardware Abstraction zLarge coverage to make it useful to all applications. zPlanned to accommodate all interfaces from application to hardware resources. zTrapped in vast small details that make the abstraction composed of inefficient codes and routines.
40
Impact on Kernel zLarge Kernel Size. zComplex Algorithm. zUnreliable. zInflexible. zHard global optimization since too many codes and routines are affected.
41
Impact on Applications zInefficient. zComplex Algorithm. zCan not grealty improve the efficiency since many details have been hidden away from application.
42
Exokernel Prototype Design zCreated and introduced by Dawson R. Engler and M. Frans Kaashoek from MIT in January 1995. zMain principle is application should manage all physical resources. zExokernel should only manage resources to the extent required by protection.
43
Exokernel Prototype Design zUse distributed resource management. zExokernel concentrate on multiplexing raw hardware.
44
Exotick zA single-user network operating system based on Exokernel design. zAs a start, planned to be a simple TCP/IP router. zFocus on: ySimple operation & programming. ySmaller kernel size. yFast response (real time).
45
Exotick zUse Assembler language for best size and speed fulfillment. zUse Netwide Assembler (NASM) version 0.97 as the compiler and linker.
46
Exotick’s Feature z32-bit OS on Intel’s architecture. zPreemptive multitasking. zFlat memory model. zSmall kernel size. zFast response (real time). zPlain text user interface. zTCP/IP support.
47
Exotick Project Status zThe project has been started since August 1998. zThe project will be completed by the end of 1998.
48

HTTP-Cache: What zUse of Proxy Server zPreviously fetched WWW objects are stored in Proxy Server zProxy Server gives cached WWW object instead of fetches it from WWW server zUse of non-persistent caching
63
HTTP-Cache: Why zWeb is the most popular application on The Net zWeb traffic in byte is about 40% zWAN link get congested zMost WWW objects are static
64
HTTP-Cache: Facts zHTTP-Cache reduces WAN traffic zMore Effective than Server mirror
65
Cache Hierarchy zCache-Server mesh zCollaborates using “parent-sibling” relationship zSibling: fetches WWW-object only if it is found in local cache zParent: always fetches requested WWW- object
