Abertillery Comprehensive School Learning Charter Articles 28 & 29 - children have the right to an education. Discipline in school should respect a child's human dignity. Children should be encouraged to reach the highest level of education they are capable of. Education should develop each child's personality and talents to the full. Learners Listen and be quiet when the teacher is teaching. Do their best at every piece of work. Let other learners work and learn without disruption. Accept that there will be consequences if responsibilities are not met. Complete homework as and when required. Everyone Arrive at lessons on time. Have the correct equipment ready for the lesson. Treat others politely, respectfully, and without discrimination. Not intentionally humiliate, embarrass or intimidate anyone. Keep mobile phones away during lessons. Not eat or drink during lessons. Follow the rewards and consequences procedures. Staff Praise and reward learners for excellent work and behaviour. Address behaviour that affects the learning of others. Issue consequences fairly and only to those who have not met their responsibilities. Help and support learners who find work difficult. Provide opportunities for learners of all abilities to be successful. Provide learners with positive feedback on how they can improve their work. Everyone has the right to learn

The Abertillery 8 1. All staff will meet, greet & dismiss learners at the door, in a positive and friendly manner. 2. All will lessons begin with a starter/settler activity. 3. The Register will be taken promptly at start of each lesson. 4. In all lessons the learning objectives will be shared with the learners. 5. All learners will sit in a seating plan as determined by the teacher. 6. All lessons will include use of continuous plenary and end with a review of the set objectives. 7. All lessons will contain appropriate use of incidental Welsh. 8. Staff and learners will create and maintain a positive learning ethos and environment. The Abertillery 8 should be used alongside our Learning Charter which ensures that everyone has the right to learn through a caring and consistent approach.

The Abertillery 8 1. All staff will meet, greet & dismiss learners at the door, in a positive and friendly manner. Be at your door when the learners arrive. Welcome them(in Welsh) Allow time for packing away. Ask learners to stand or sit in silence. Stand at your door. Dismiss learners table at a time in an orderly fashion.

The Register will be taken promptly at start of each lesson Plan an activity for learners to complete as they enter the room. Ensure learners have everything they need. Make the activity challenging but ensure they can all achieve some level of success. Make the activity last long enough to allow you to take the register. Make the activity relevant.

The Abertillery 8 4. In all lessons the learning objectives will be shared with the learners. Set the context of the lesson. Share the learning objectives with all learners. If possible leave the objectives in view for the whole lesson. Before starting the main activity question learners on the objectives. Ensure learning objectives are achievable but still present challenge. Recap on the objectives periodically throughout the lesson.

The Abertillery 8 5. All learners will sit in a seating plan as determined by the teacher. You should determine where learners sit. Seating plans may vary depending on the activity you have planned. Explain this to learners. Avoid friendship groups for formal activities. Do not sit learners in rows unless the activity you have planned requires it. This should not be the norm.

The Abertillery 8 6. All lessons will include use of continuous plenary and end with a review of the set objectives. Don't miss opportunities to teach. Recap on the objectives periodically throughout the lesson. Ensure you use a range of questioning techniques to recap prior learning and highlight progress during the lesson. Allow enough time at the end of the lesson to review learning objectives and demonstrate progress.

The Abertillery 8 7. All lessons will contain appropriate use of incidental Welsh. Meet and greet learners in Welsh. Praise learners in Welsh. Give simple instructions in Welsh. Write the date on the board in Welsh. Include some basic Welsh phrases in your written feedback to learners. Try to include the Welsh word of the week. Seek advice if you are unsure of the pronunciation.

The Abertillery 8 8. Staff and learners will create and maintain a positive learning ethos and environment. Keep your rooms tidy and clutter free. Ensure all displays are replaced regularly. If displays are tatty fix or replace them. Ensure displays celebrate learners work. Try to create a balance between instructional and celebratory displays. Don't put dates on displays. Be positive. Strike the balance between rewarding good behaviour and sanctioning poor behaviour. 3:1
