Where is the process is breaking down? Employee puts suggestion in box Manager reads suggestions Manager chooses a suggestion of the month Manager organizes implementation of the suggestion 21 We encourage employees to make suggestions by offering prizes and recognition. We trained managers for this program, but don’t offer them prizes or recognition. Reading suggestions can be time- consuming. Some managers say they don’t have the time Implementing suggestions involves motivating employees to change, training them, and monitoring results. Creating triggers

The suggestions are good! 26 We lose good candidates we make offers too slowly and they find something else by then. Instead of sending offer proposals to HR, we should have a salary range in advance and let the manager make an offer on the spot, based on his/her budget. In my department, lots of people don’t know how to automate Word or Excel and spend 10 times what they need to on their tasks. Just one knowledgeable person, going around to employees and helping them could save huge amounts of time. We require employees to get the signature of our department head when they want to change desks or make other minor changes, but he isn’t always here and so they have to wait. They hate that. In reality, any one of us could give the approval and get them on their way sooner. 2 2 Build (for table)

Research is clear about necessary components of a suggestion program A senior manager needs to champion the program and sit on the evaluation committee A cross-functional team must review suggestions & acknowledge them within 48 hours An administrator must make sure the process moves along; if not, it reduces morale 40 This lends credibility to the employee suggestion program and makes suggesters feel important. It must have the power to implement suggestions and be willing to ask “why not” rather than “why.” One company had 100+ suggestions stuck in a review committee that kept postponing meetings. Using a trigger to display more information 9 9
