3 OBJECTIVESOBJECTIVES  THE PARTICIPANT WILL BE ABLE TO:  State 2 ways to stay healthy while having diabetes  List 2 signs of: Hyperglycemia (High blood sugar) Hypoglycemia (Low blood sugar)

4 WHAT IS THE PANCREAS?  Organ in the body that makes: INSULIN

5 WHAT IS INSULIN?  Insulin is needed to keep the body’s BLOOD SUGAR at an even level

6 WHAT IS DIABETES-TYPE 1 ?  A person’s body DOES NOT make insulin

7 WHAT IS DIABETES-TYPE 2 ?  A person’s body can make insulin, but the body CAN NOT use it

8 COULD I HAVE DIABETES?  ARE YOU……? Frequently Thirsty Frequently Hungry

9 COULD I HAVE DIABETES ?  ARE YOU…….? Frequently urinating Always tired

10 COULD I HAVE DIABETES ?  ARE YOU……? Quickly losing weight Having cuts that won’t heal Having blurry vision

11 WHAT DO I DO NEXT ?  REPORT THESE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS TO YOUR CAREGIVER/ DOCTOR

12 ALWAYS CALL THE DOCTOR IF……  You are unsure of what to do  This has never happened to you  You have these symptoms and you do not have diabetes

13 WHEN BLOOD SUGAR IS LOW….  This can be a dangerous condition  If this happens, you need to seek treatment FAST

14 WHAT CAUSES LOW BLOOD SUGAR?  Not following your meal plan  Too much exercise  Taking the wrong medications

15 WHAT ELSE CAUSES LOW BLOOD SUGAR?  Stress  Alcohol intake

16 SIGNS OF LOW BLOOD SUGAR  Dizziness  Sweating  Confusion

17 MORE SIGNS OF LOW BLOOD SUGAR  Hunger  Headache

18 PREVENTING LOW BLOOD SUGAR  Take your meds at the same time everyday  Always carry a source of sugar  Follow your meal plan

19 TREATING LOW BLOOD SUGAR  If able, get a blood sugar reading  Take a fast acting sugar

20 WHEN BLOOD SUGAR IS HIGH…..  This can also be a very dangerous condition  You need to seek treatment fast

21 WHAT CAUSES HIGH BLOOD SUGAR?  Not following your meal plan  Sickness  Too much stress

22 SIGNS OF HIGH BLOOD SUGAR  Tiredness  Rapid breathing  Increased appetite

23 MORE SIGNS OF HIGH BLOOD SUGAR  Increased urination  Fruity smelling breath

24 PREVENTING HIGH BLOOD SUGAR  Take meds as directed  Follow meal plan  Follow an exercise program  Decrease stress

25 TREATING HIGH BLOOD SUGAR  If able, get a blood sugar reading  Drink Sugar-Free liquid

26 WHAT MEDS WILL I NEED?  DEPENDS ON THE TYPE OF DIABETES YOU HAVE  Pills you can swallow  Insulin

27 HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED INSULIN?  You may need insulin if you have…. A very high blood sugar A sickness Uncontrolled weight loss

28 WHY ELSE MIGHT I NEED INSULIN?  You may need insulin if you have…  Surgery  Kidney disease  Unable to swallow pills

29 DIET AND DIABETES  Some foods are high in sugar: ~Peas~Corn~Carrots ~Beets~Melons~Grapes ~Bananas **Be cautious of “Low Fat” or “Fat Free” foods

30 EXERCISE AND DIABETES  ALWAYS check with the doctor before starting an exercise program!!!!  Watch for low blood sugar  It is best to exercise ½ hour after eating

31 SMOKING AND DIABETES  Smoking can lead to complications such as: – Heart attack, High Blood Pressure – Stroke, Kidney Problems  Seek Help to “KICK THE HABIT”

32 SKIN CARE AND DIABETES  Check feet daily for sores or blisters  Wear proper fitting shoes  See the foot doctor for trimming of toenails

33 DENTAL CARE AND DIABETES  It is important to see your dentist at least every 6 months  Remember to :BRUSH AND FLOSS  Follow the dentist’s recommendations

34 WHEN I AM SICK………  If unable to eat: check with the doctor before taking your medicine  NEVER take more or less medicine without talking to the doctor  Examples of illnesses
