2.  The story takes place in an apartment where the main characters live. It’s in a busy urban place in Reno. Some of the story takes place in Liberty, New York.

3.  Heidi- Heidi is a 12 year old determined to find out her mother’s past to explain her story and words.  So B. It- Mama is Heidi’s mother. She knows 23 words and is special needs.  Bernadette- Bernie (or “Dette”) took Heidi and Mama under her wing when Mama showed up at Bernie’s door with week old Heidi. Bernie’s teaches Mama life skills and takes care of Heidi.

4.  The problem in the story is that Heidi found pictures of her mom and some other people at Christmas time. She also notices that her mom says “soof” and, until she visits Liberty, only mama knows what it means. She’s been worried and Is going to find out herself.

5.  In the end, Heidi discovers that her last name is DeMuth and her grandparents, parents, and even her were in the pictures that she found. The headache that had been bothering Mama actually got really bad and that is how she died.

6.  This book is the touchy kind of book that might (I said might) even make you cry. It is a great yet very sad book that teaches you how important family and friends are.

7.  Sarah Weeks was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  She is 56 years old.  Her dad was an English professor at University of Michigan.  She has two sons named Gabe and Nat.  She raised her family in New York.

8.  How do you think the headache killed Mama?  When Elliott says “soof” do you think that they are thinking of each other?  Do you think Heidi knew she was related to Elliott?  Do you think Mr. Hill recognized Heidi?  Do you think Heidi knew she would find her family?

9.  Mama (special needs) shows up at Bernie’s door at an apartment in Reno holding baby Heidi. Bernie takes them in. When Heidi gets older, she notices a mysterious word, “soof” in Mama’s vocab. With money from babysitting and a slot machine, she heads off to Liberty, New York in search of an explanation. She finds her grandparents and father and gets a call that Mama died.
