Happy Halloween!! 1. Please take out your Cell Types & Organelle Notes from the last two classes 1. Please take out your Cell Types & Organelle Notes from the last two classes 2. Please take out 2 blank pieces of paper (one for your Bellwork & one for the Cheek & Onion Cell Lab)
2
Cheek/Onion Cell Bellwork 1. Complete the Venn Diagram by suggesting ways (shape/organelles) in which a cheek cell (animal cell) may be similar and/or different from an onion cell (plant cell) ONION CELLS Cheek Cells
3
Cell Organelle Lab with Onion Cells and Cheek Cells Purpose of this lab: 1. To Observe Live Cells 2. To Identify the Structural Differences between Plant & Animal Cells 3. To Identify a Cell Nucleus
4
Lab Materials and Procedures MATERIALS Toothpicks Pieces of onionMicroscope Glass slidesColored Pencils CoverslipsMarkers Iodine Solution Methylene Blue Solution Paper towels
5
PROCEDURES PART I – ONION CELL PART I – ONION CELL 1. Peel a THIN piece of onion (the skin) and place in the center of the glass slide. 2. Add 1 or 2 drops of IODINE to the onion peel and place cover slip on top 3. Examine the onion slide UNDER LOW POWER (Medium size lens); Draw what the cell looks like AND label ALL organelles you can identify 4. Examine onion cell under HIGH Power; Draw what the cell looks like AND label ALL organelles you can identify
6
Part 2: Examining Cheek Cells Part 2: Examining Cheek Cells 1. Choose 1 person in your group to scrape the inside of their cheek using a flat toothpick 2. Rub toothpick over the slide and PLACE 1 drop of METHYLENE BLUE SOLUTION over your cheek cells and cover with cover slip 3. Follow steps 3 & 4 as listed from the onion lab for the drawing the cheek cell.

RECORDING LAB DATA Draw & Label Cheek/Onion Cell. Be sure you include ALL Cell Organelles that you can see! Cheek Cell Onion Cell Cheek Cell: Low Power Onion Cell: Low Power Cheek Cell: High Power Onion Cell: High Power

Onion/Cheek Cell Post-lab Reflection Qs Copy & Answer 1. Discuss 3 observations you made of the onion cells and 3 observations you made of the cheek cells. (Be descriptive) 2. How did the cheek/onion cells differ? How were the cheek/onion cells similar? 3. Specifically, how did the shape of the onion cell differ from the shape of the cheek cell? 4. Describe all of the organelles you were able to recognize in the cheek and onion cell (Label clearly). 5. Review the 3 purposes of this lab. Explain whether EACH purpose was met and HOW each purpose was met.

Some Useful Tips….. Don’t BE AFRAID TO MAKE MISTAKES!!! Trial and Error is the best way to learn Don’t BE AFRAID TO MAKE MISTAKES!!! Trial and Error is the best way to learn Some of the greatest INVENTIONS/PRODUCTS of our time were discovered by mistakes Some of the greatest INVENTIONS/PRODUCTS of our time were discovered by mistakes ESPECIALLY with the CHEEK Cells try it a few times until you can identify clearly visible cells ESPECIALLY with the CHEEK Cells try it a few times until you can identify clearly visible cells

WHAT I EXPECT FROM YOU DURING THE LAB….. 1. Draw the ONION and CHEEK Cell Using 2 POWERS: Low (Medium Lens) and High on your chart using Colored Pencils/Markers – IT MUST BE COLORED!!! 2. When finished clean up ALL of your MATERIALS, complete your sketching, coloring and labeling diagrams 3. Answer ALL Post Lab Questions
