TODAY’S AGENDA: Warm up (10) Go over HW (10) Venn diagram (30) 21September F Today’ objectives: 1. Identify the function of structures in a prokaryote, eukaryote and bacteria. *turn in stamp calendar! ESLRs Addressed: 1. Achieve Academic proficiency 2. Communicate Effectively 3. Demonstrate Civility
2
Take out your cell diagrams, definitions, follow up Q’s and both calendars… While I stamp answer the following according to CC 1. Explain the difference between prokaryotic cells & eukarytotic cells; 2. Identify what types of organisms are made of prokaryotic cells & which are made of eukaryotic. 3. Explain why viruses are not alive, but bacteria are. 4. Identify three organelles that are found in plant cells but not in animal cells.
3
Warm Up Answers 1.A eukaryotic cell has a nucleus and membrane bound organelle, while a prokaryote does not. 2.Organisms that are prokaryotic are bacteria, while all living organisms except bacteria are eukaryotic 3.Viruses are not alive because they do not have a cell membrane, it can’t reproduce on its own, doesn’t have ribosomes/cytoplasm. 4.Three structures that plants have that animal cells don’t are cell wall, central vacuole and chloroplast.
4
Lab follow up Questions 1.The bacteria are prokaryotic. I know this because they lacked a nucleus. 2.The cellular structures that were visible cheek cell were the cell membrane, the cytoplasm, the nucleus and smaller structures that could be ER or mitochondria. 3.Cheek cells are eukaryotic, are cheek cells? I know this because they have a nucleus. 4.The primary difference between prokaryotic & eukaryotic cells is that eukaryotic cells have a nucleus and prokaryotic cells do not.
5
Lab follow up Questions 5.The structures present in plant cells but not animal cells are chloroplasts, a central vacuole & a cell wall. 6.The function of chloroplasts is to house chlorophyll and serve as a site for photosynthesis. 7.There are no chloroplasts in the onion because this part of the onion grows below ground and receives no sunlight. Chlorophyll and the chloroplasts that contain them are not needed here because this part of the plant does not do photosynthesis.
6
Lab follow up Questions 8.If we had the equipment to look at a virus we would see no cellular structures because viruses are not cells! They have a protein coat and hereditary material, but are not cells 9.Evaluate each of your hypothesis. Refer to each by number (1a, 1b etc) and state whether or not they need changes, if they do, make them. 10.At the beginning of the lab, we posed a question. Write a through response to this question using information from this lab.

Standard 1 C – KB assignment 1.Fold a large sheet of construction paper in half like a book. 2.Open the book & glue your cell comparison picture on one side of the paper and your organelle key on the other side. 3.Close the “book”. On the front cover title the book write “STANDARD 1 C – Students know how prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells (including those of plants & animals and viruses differ in complexity and general structure. 4.Below the this glue your Venn diagram & question answers. 5.You have 15 minutes – get a stamp
