Endosymbiont Theory 4.Ancestral prokaryote becomes a host cell by engulfing another prokaryote—one that consumes others for food (heterotrophic) & that respires (uses oxygen) 5.Some of these ancestral prokaryote also engulf a photosynthetic prokaryote 6.Eventually these engulfed prokaryotes live inside the cell (symbiosis) in a way that is beneficial to the host 4 56
