7. Our Approach Start with “Preparation“ stage (inside discipleship for at least 2 years before release. Establish “Provision” stage ( transitional housing,jobs,mentoring upon release for 1 year). Develop the “Placement” stage (upon graduation of the inside/outside classes, assist with permanent housing and reconciliation w/ community and family).

8. WHY AFTERCARE MINISTRY IN South Carolina ? THE FIRST YEAR OF RELEASE IS WHEN MUCH OF THE RECIDIVISM OCCURS, OVER TWO THIRDS, BASED ON THE BUREAU OF JUSTICE. South Carolina ranks # 7 in the total US in recidivism rates, making it a perfect place to begin this vision. According to data from SCDC† there is a population of 21,712 inmates in SC, *11,409 were released in 2012. 10,170 came into SCDC in 2012. In fact there are over 33k on parole. SCDC spent over $370m maintaining and housing prisoners in 2012. Additionally, SC spends on average over $16k per year on each inmate. Furthermore with the average prison term at 5 years, SC spends over $80k per inmate just on maintaining and housing these inmates. For every ex-offender who successfully completes this program, the potential of saving the taxpayer could be over $80k. In addition, this person becomes a law abiding tax paying citizen. We have helped 226 graduates make transition since 2009 and 8 have went back to prison. This is less then 5% returning. † South Carolina Department of Corrections, May 30,2012 (* 2012-)
