Radiology Packet 38 Female Reproductive

1-year old Valley Bulldog “Pooch” Hx: Presented following parturition of several pups. The owner is concerned that more puppies are present.

1-year old Valley Bulldog “Pooch” RF –A single mineralized fetal skeleton is noted. –In the VD view, this skeleton appears somewhat straight in its configuration. –The sutures of the skull are not clearly visualized. RD –Single retained fetus which is believed to be dead

2-year old F DLH “Silver” Hx: Straining for 5 hours – one kitten ½ way out was removed manually. Radiograph taken to check for an additional fetus +/- any reason for dystocia.

2-year old F DLH “Silver” RF –One relatively large mineralized fetus is visible in the abdominal cavity. –The fetus is positioned with its’ head at the pelvic inlet. –The head of the fetus appears to be about the same size as the diameter of the pelvic inlet. –There is a healed fracture of the left ilium and malformation of the pelvic floor. This patient sustained pelvic fractures when hit by a car ~1 year ago. RD –Gravid uterus Next –Caesarian section because of pelvic abnormality.

9-year old Female Labrador “Brandy” Hx: Presenting complaint of lethargy and PU/PD. Her abdomen seems to be distended according to her owner.

9-year old Female Labrador “Brandy” RF –Large abnormal soft tissue structures, which appear tubular, are noted in the mid- to caudal abdomen. –The urinary bladder cannot be seen with confidence. –The descending colon is pushed towards the midline. –The black lines across the radiographs are artifacts from rollers within the automatic processor. RD –Massively fluid distended uterus R/O –Pyometra –Mucometra –Hydrometra Next –Ultrasound and bloodwork

5-year old Female Chihuahua Hx: Presented for a distended abdomen. The owner noticed yesterday that the dog’s abdomen seemed larger than normal. She is lethargic and her appetite is decreased.

5-year old Female Chihuahua RF –The stomach is displaced cranially and the intestines are displaced dorsally in the lateral view and cranial and to the right in the VD view by a large, soft-tissue opacity tubular structure in the ventral abdomen. –The urinary bladder is displaced caudally by the same structure. –Several very opaque circular objects are seen in the VD view, these correspond to mammary structures. RD –Fluid-filled viscus R/O –Enlarged uterus Pyometra Pregnancy –Enlarged intestinal loops secondary to intestinal obstruction Next –Ultrasound

2-year old F DSH Hx: Humane society cat – the cat was found as a stray so no history is known. On PE the heart is difficult to auscult and several “masses” are palpated in the abdomen. It is also noted that the “masses” move.

2-year old F DSH RF –Three mineralized fetuses are visible in the abdominal cavity. –A fourth mineralized fetus is visible in the thorax overlying the cardiac silhouette. –Multiple gas-filled tubular structures are visible cranial to the heart. –The caudal thoracic cavity appears increased in opacity in the lateral view. This is partially due to compression (atelectasis) of lung tissue by the abnormal thoracic contents. –An area of granular opacity is present in the region which may correspond to a segment of the gastrointestinal tract. RD –Pregnancy – 4 fetuses –Diaphragmatic hernia

9-year old F DSH “Joey” Hx: Presented with a 4-day history of anorexia and lethargy.

9-year old F DSH “Joey” RF –The urinary bladder is massively distended. –Multiple air bubbles are present in the lumen of the bladder. –A tubular structure of soft tissue opacity present between the descending colon and bladder is the uterus. –A faint mineral opacity outlines the most caudal extent of this structure. RD –Massive urinary bladder distension –Uterine enlargement R/O –Massive urinary bladder distension Obstruction to urine outflow (mechanical or functional) Next –Ultrasound

9-year old F Collie Hx: 3 week history of anorexia, weight loss and urinary incontinence.

9-year old F Collie RF –There is a very large mass of soft tissue opacity in the mid-abdomen. In the VD view the mass is seen to be more on the left side of the abdomen. –The mass has caused cranio-dorsal displacement of the strucutre of the intestinal tract. –A triangular area of soft tissue opacity in the cranio-ventral abdomen is thought to be the ventral portion of the spleen. –There is loss of abdominal detail. –There is an incidental finding of spondylosis at several sites in the lumbar spine. RD –Large mid-abdominal mass R/O –Mass originating from spleen, ovary or left kidney Next –Ultrasound
