RtI: The Key to “All” is Every 2010-2011 RtI Basics in BASD

Food for thought… RtI is about intervening and adjusting instruction to meet students’ needs instead of thinking there is something “wrong” with the child.

After this session, you will have a shared understanding of the Basics of RtI listed below. Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum for all Data-based decision making Balanced assessment with problem solving team approach in a professional learning community (PLC) Targeted interventions with progress monitoring Specially Designed interventions with progress monitoring

Tier III (5%) Intensive interventions progress monitoring Very small groupwork Tier III (5%) Intensive interventions progress monitoring Very small groupwork Tier II (10-15%) Selected interventions progress monitoring Small groupwork Tier II (10-15%) Selected interventions progress monitoring Small groupwork Tier I ( 80% shows adequate growth within the core.) Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum for all students universal screenings for all differentiation for all Tier I ( 80% shows adequate growth within the core.) Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum for all students universal screenings for all differentiation for all Ongoing thoughtful assessment that monitors individual student progress over time. Focus support and extend tier I. Specialized

Tier I : Focus on the Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum for All The curriculum with topics and common core standards that are actually taught and assessed in all classrooms. Teaching the essentials in sufficient depth, with adequate time for authentic literacy: deep reading, writing, and talking. Structurally sound lessons that ensure that all students are learning.

Problem Solving Team Approach Evaluate data analysis Implement the plan fidelitymonitor progress Develop a plan What is going to be done?intervention Define the problem What is the problem? Why is it happening?

The screening tools reflect what is valued Annual FrequencyPurpose Measures of Academic Progress (MAP grades 2- 9) 3 times/year (gr. 2-9) identify proficiency levels in reading, language usage, math Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) 2 times/year (KMS) Ascertain reading level (Lexile level) Running records for reading proficiency (K-4) 2 times/year (elementary) Ascertain reading level (guided reading level) WKCE1x/yearSummative program evaluation

Intervention Defined Focus on preventing or stopping failure Instruction that is “in addition to” Enhances the core Adjusts the intensity of instruction Approach varies according to student need Material reflects a gradient of difficulty Promotes acceleration Repeated practice to achieve mastery Short term support Ongoing assessment and data analysis Coordinates with core curriculum Every minute counts!

Quality Intervention! It takes a knowledgeable professional to diagnose student needs. It is student centered. Instructional efforts are coordinated between tiers I and II. Interventions are highly engaging interactions. The focus is on acceleration over remediation. It requires rich assessment that incorporates both formative and summative measures.

Our Roadmap to Instructional Excellence is for every student and every teacher. As we go forward we must be committed to insuring that every child has access to the guaranteed and viable curriculum. RtI is one of the “best practices” that we will need to reach our target! We are at the crossroads. Can do!

_______ I now know that the “Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum” for all students is key to the RtI process. _______ I now know that data-based decision making is basic to the RtI process. _______ I now know that balanced assessment and the problem solving team approach and professional learning communities (PLC) are involved in the RtI process. _______ I am beginning to understand that targeted interventions and progress monitoring will occur in Tier II. _______ I am beginning to understand that specially designed intervention and progress monitoring will occur in Tier III. Stay tuned for more RtI on Feb 24th! After that day you will be an RtI Whiz!! Exit Slip True False
