Influence of the Affordable Care Act on Healthcare Providers Future Employment Outlook Presented May 22, 2013 to PAAHCR By Craig Overpeck – COO MDLinx Career Center

Overview In May 2013 the MDLinx.com Career Center, the largest healthcare provider specialty platform in the USA offering career opportunities, and M3 Global Research an ISO Certified marketing research provider with one of the Largest Physician and Allied/Advanced Practitioner HCP Panels, ran a market research study to ascertain what is important to HCP’s as they seek employment in the new environment of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). Moreover, we surveyed where HCP look for these opportunities and what their motivating factors are in selecting a new opportunity

Survey Details: 502 responded: 275 were Nurse Practitioners ; 227 were Physician Assistants. Survey was conducted by email over 7 hours 75% of respondents were at current position for over 3 years 15.5 % of respondents were at their position between 1-3 years 8.8% of respondents were at their position less than 1 year 34.7% of respondents indicated their specialty is Family Medicine 10% of respondents indicated their specialty is Internal Medicine 7.2% of respondents indicated their specialty is Pediatrics

How did you find your current job? Note: Respondents were ask to “check all that apply” for this category. Word-of-mouth and Online Job Boards are the top two methods to learn of new job opportunities.

Formal Onboard Program Note: Surprisingly most PA’s indicated that they did not receive a formal Onboarding at the time they were hired, which has been blamed in some provider professions with higher employee turnover and dissatisfaction. Most NP’s on the other hand, participated in an Onboarding Program within the first months of hire

Awareness of Onboarding Program Note: Respondents were split down the middle with awareness of a formal onboarding program prior to hire. More NP’s were aware of the program than PA’s.

Do Onboarding programs influence NP’s and PA’s to join the Practice? Note: NP’s and PA’s responded that Onboarding Programs do not influence their decision to join a new practice but prior studies indicate they could be sources for improved job performance and satisfaction that increase employee retention

Best items to provide a new hire Note: New HCP employees desire these items to help orient themselves to the facility, which could be part of a formalized Onboarding Program

New Hire items provided within days of official start date Note: Even the most basic of items like an org chart of phone directory are not provided to the majority of new HCPs

Affordable Care Act (ACA) & Job Security Note: Half of NP respondents believe that ACA will make their jobs more secure while PA’s see the passage of the law having no effect on job security

Will ACA create more jobs ? Yes Note: Both NP’s and PA’s overwhelmingly feel that ACA will create more jobs in the near future

Will ACA change your daily role ? Note: Both the majority of NP’s an PA’s anticipate increased responsibilities with ACA

Outlook on earning potential under ACA Note: Despite foreseen increased number of job and responsibilities under ACA both NP’s and PA’s do not anticipate their income potential increasing and PA’s are more pessimistic of their earning potential

Would you recommend students to your profession ? Note: With the anticipated growth in jobs under ACA, current NP’s and PA’s highly recommend their profession to the class of 2014

Will you change jobs in the future ? Note: One quarter of the workforce anticipates changing jobs in the future. The majority of the respondents seem to be pleased at their current job and have no plans to change jobs in the future Discussion: What is today’s retention rate at your facility or practice and what ways can we increase the retention rate ?

Important Aspects of a new job? Note: Respondents were asked to rank in order of importance. 1= Most important; 8 = Lease Important. Clearly Salary, Location and Flexible Hours are the top priority for picking a new job

How far will you travel to work ? Note: While most respondents said they would not move for their next new job, a close second said anywhere, meaning for the right opportunity almost one third of people would relocate outside of their area (for physicians the number drops to 20%)

Resources to find next job Note: The majority of respondents indicated that they will use career websites and networking with colleagues to find their next job
