1 Misleading Headlines Literacy

2 “MILK DRINKERS ARE TURNING TO POWDER!”
HEADLINE: Read the following headline and begin to think about what you believe this headline may be about “MILK DRINKERS ARE TURNING TO POWDER!”

3 What do we think this headline is about?
Who is it about? What is it trying to say? What might be happening?

4 THE FACTS (TRUE STORY):
The article is about a man named David Green who designed a special form of powdered milk for humans to drink Green believes that his powdered milk is more beneficial for humans He believes that he can pack a lot more nutrients into the powdered milk than you would get from consuming regular cow milk Relates it to the idea of how we feed our pets dog or cat food rather than what they would eat in the wild

5 Are Headlines Misleading?

6 They certainly can be… Much like we talked about last lesson with the media, headlines on articles, newspapers, or other literacy pieces can give off the wrong impressions

7 Examples of Misleading Headlines
“KIDS MAKE NUTRITIOUS SNACKS” “COMPLAINTS ABOUT NBA REFEREES GROWING UGLY” “MAN EATING PIRANHA MISTAKENLY SOLD AS PET FISH” “HOSPITALS ARE SUED BY 7 FOOT DOCTORS” “ENRAGED COW INJURES FARMER WITH AX”

8 Your Job – Write your own article!
You will each be given a Headline, but not the article that goes with it You will be writing the article for what you believe the headline may be about Think about the example we did at the beginning of the class consider these things: Who is the article about? What is happening? Where is it happening? Why is it happening? Aim for 1-2 paragraphs to complete your article

9 The Real Article You will now read the real article that goes with your headline While reading this article, consider the real story to the story that you created Think about whether or not you were mislead by the headline

10 Lets Discuss How were our stories compared to the real article?
Were we mislead by the headlines?

11 Exit Slip On the Exit Slip provided, please answer the following question: How did you do? Was the facts (real article) different from your own opinion of the headline? Did the headline mislead you?
