What does HEPA stand for? High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance or High Efficiency Particulate Air The first HEPA filters were developed in the 1940's by the USA Atomic Energy Commission to fulfill a top-secret need for an efficient, effective way to filter radioactive particulate contaminants. HEPA air filters have been traditionally used in hospital operating and isolation rooms, pharmaceutical and computer chip manufacturing, as well as in other applications requiring "Absolute" Filtration. How does HEPA work? The fibers in HEPA filters (shown here as gray bars) trap dust and dirt particles in three ways. 1.Impaction: Particles crash into filter fibers and are absorbed by impact. 2.Interception: Particles flow along in the moving airstream, move too close to a fiber and are trapped. 3.Diffusion: At lower air speeds, particles are trapped when randomly moving dust and air particles crash into one another and some are pushed into the filter fibers. What is the effectiveness of HEPA? 99.97% particulate removal at.3 microns in size or greater See below chart to reference size of various particulates in air Air Cleaner Q&A
12
How is air cleaner product effectiveness measured? CADR (clean air delivery rate) is published (typically on packaging) for consumers to reference performance and overall room size. CADR consists of three numbers: - Smoke (lowest number) - Dust (middle) - Pollen (highest) These numbers are established by third party lab testing using ANSI/ASHRAE standard. The smoke number is used to calculate room size coverage. The dust number is used to calculate Energy Star claim. What is AHAM Certification? AHAM stands for American Household Appliance Manufacturers. It is a voluntary association for manufacturers. This agency polices CADR claims of members only. Air Cleaner Q&A
13
What drives effectiveness of HEPA filter? Velocity of air through the filter: air moving too fast, degrades performance of filter. Filter specs (size, pleats/inch and paper quality) must be aligned with overall product air volume (CFM) target. Filter Effectiveness vs. Unit Effectiveness Some manufacturers can mislead consumers by stating the efficiency of the filter at true HEPA standards on packaging but when used in the air cleaner unit, it does not perform at the stated claim. 1. Stand alone filter is rated True HEPA at a certain air volume. 2. Unit runs at higher air volume, sacrificing filter’s True HEPA performance. Example: True HEPA filter: rated at 99.97% of.3 microns at 150 CFM Manufacturer X uses this filter in unit moving 300 CFM – Filter effectiveness is then sacrificed. What does a carbon filter do? Gas/Chemical particles stick to carbon filter, therefore being removed from the air. This process is called ADSORPTION, different from absorption. Air Cleaner Q&A
