The prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome (MS) among Spanish adults of working age is about 12% Registro MESYAS The prevalence of MS in United States is a 23% Ford, JAMA 2002 Most patients (> 80%) with type 2 diabetes have MS, but the opposite is not necessarily true. Metabolic Syndrome (MS) increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases
3
THEORY The prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome in non-diabetics is thought to be lower than in the general population
4
To determine the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome in non-diabetics PURPOSE
5
METHODS Cross-sectional study Subjects aged ≥ 18 years Ramdomly selected from a region (population ≈37.267) Cross-sectional study Subjects aged ≥ 18 years Ramdomly selected from a region (population ≈37.267) Exclusion criteria: Diabetes Gestational diabetes Secondary diabetes A1C ≥ 5.7% Variables recorded: Age Gender Waist circumference Blood pressure Drugs treatment Metabolic syndrome defined according the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Pannel III 2001 (NCEP ATP III) Variables recorded: Fasting plasma glucose HDL cholesterol Triglycerides A1C

NCEP ATP III 2001 Blood Pressure≥ 130/85 mmHg or drugs Fasting Plasma Glucose≥ 110 mg/dL or drugs Hypertriglyceridaemia≥ 150 mg/dL Low HDL-cholesterol< 40 mg/dL in males < 50 mg/dL in females Central obesityWaist circumference > 88 cm females > 102 cm males

RESULTS N=282 subjects Average age 51.4 years (95% CI 49.9-52.9) 61.7% women 38.3% men Average A1C: 5.64 (95% CI 5.59-5.69)

The prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome in the general population is about 17-24%. In our research, it is about 18%, excluding diabetes. Our study suggests that Metabolic Syndrome is associated with diabetes, but this is not a determining factor. The other components (high blood pressure, hypertriglyceridaemia, low HDL cholesterol and central obesity) have an important role in the development of that condition. Improving the control of these risk factors could reduce the risk of developing cardiovacular diseases. DISCUSSION
