KEY FEATURES KEY FEATURES Obesity refers to carrying excess body weight (in the form of fat) It is measured using Body Mass Index (BMI) with an index of 30+ as obese or waist measurement if more than 89cm in women and 102 in men

REASONS FOR OBESITY SELECTION - NHPA 1. Contributes significantly to the Burden of Disease 2. Contributes to many common diseases in Australia such as: a.Cardiovascular disease b.Diabetes c.Arthritis d.Kidney disease By reducing levels of obesity reduction in these diseases is possible 3. The proportion of obese adults has doubled between 1990 – 2009 and is expected to rise 4. Obesity is preventable – awareness and education people modify lifestyle choices

EG Shape Up Australian ●Cost of a carer for someone who is obese and is unable to work - transport, shopping, cleaning, washing, cooking ●Loss of income as a person cannot work because of their injury ●The cost of social security payments through Centrelink for someone who cannot work because of obesity ●Loss of taxation revenue by the government because of person is unable to work and not pay taxes ●Loss of productivity by the person who cannot work or a person who has to give up work to care for the person ●Person may experience a range of emotions – sadness, anger, frustration, fear, despair. ●anxiety of not being able to perform everyday tasks. Family and friends experience frustration and sadness because of the a loved who is obese

NShape Up Australia O Federal Government F Australian government is partnering with organisations that support lifestyle changes consumers can identify through the “Shape Up Australia” brand credible information, products and services to assist them maintain a healthy weight To be eligible to use the brand, organisations need to meet criteria such as their products, services and activities align with national dietary and physical activity guidelines The “Shape Up Australia” website – range of tools and resources are available for consumers and partnering organisations including advice relating to engaging in physical activity and making healthier food choices -Gives advice to amount of physical activity individuals should engage in, ways physical activity can be incorporated into everyday life -Gives advice on how to maintain a healthy body weight, tips on choosing healthier foods and recipes on preparing healthier meals O To reduce waist measurement and improve overall health and well-being

NShape Up Australia O Federal Government F Shape Up Australia is a program that aims to change people’s lifestyles. The SUA website provides a range of resources to people and organisations to provide advice on physical activity and healthier good choices. Advice is given on the amount of exercise individuals should engage in and how to incorporate this into their daily lives. Advice is given on how to maintain a healthy body weight, tips for choosing healthier foods and recipes on preparing helathier meals.
