NC LIVE / KTLV 5 of 35 Class Outline  Introduction (10 min)  CINAHL: Keyword Searching and Viewing Results (20 min)  CINAHL: Subject Heading Searching (20 min)  CINAHL: Citation Searching (20 min)  Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition (5 min)  Metasearching in EBSCOhost (10 min)  Wrap-up (5 min)

NC LIVE / JSK 6 of 35 CINAHL: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature Subjects: nursing, allied health, biomedicine, alternative medicine, and consumer health. Indexes books, dissertations, conference proceedings, book chapters, journals, etc. Includes 2,960 journals – over 597 in full text (July ‘09). PDF backfiles to 1981 are also included. Searchable by keyword, controlled subject heading, or citation linking (2000 to present).

NC LIVE / KTLV 7 of 35 Beginning Searching: Keywords Advanced search better than basic  Structured search boxes with Boolean/wildcards  Field searching Keyword searching  Anywhere in record (default)  Specific field Suggest Subject Terms option

NC LIVE / KTLV 8 of 35 “Refining” Your Search: Limits Wide variety of limits available:  Type of article  Research area  Language  Age  Full text  Date published  Peer reviewed journals  Research journals

NC LIVE / JSK 9 of 35 Building and Saving Searches: Search History/Alerts Return to previous search Refine previous search Combine searches Save searches to run later and/or to have email updates sent automatically Print out record of searches performed Put in a personal database

NC LIVE /JSK 10 of 35 Results! Standard EBSCO format Article citations in reverse chronological order  Title hyperlinked to citation record  Much full text (HTML or PDF)  Some with citation linking Faceted searching via subject headings Narrow by publication type Standard * truncation

NC LIVE / KTLV 11 of 35 CINAHL Citation Record Easily switch between this & full text Main indexing terms are hyperlinked  Author, journal, etc.  Major & minor subject headings

NC LIVE / JSK 12 of 35 Let’s Practice! A nursing student has come to you for help in finding information for a case study that she is researching. She needs to find information on interventions school nurses can use to help prevent student obesity. Do a keyword search in CINAHL for some preliminary results. Let us know what you found?

NC LIVE / KTLV 13 of 35 Class Outline  Introduction (10 min)  CINAHL: Keyword Searching and Viewing Results (20 min)  CINAHL: Subject Heading Searching (20 min)  CINAHL: Citation Searching (20 min)  Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition (5 min)  Metasearching in EBSCOhost (10 min)  Wrap-up (5 min)

NC LIVE / JSK 14 of 35 Advanced Searching: CINAHL Headings Controlled subject headings denote “aboutness” of an article/book/etc. Help find articles on a topic regardless of words used in title/abstract Allows for the option to cover multiple terms Allows for more precision with subheadings

NC LIVE / JSK 15 of 35 Browsing for CINAHL Headings Click “CINAHL Headings” button Browsing menu: suggest Relevancy Ranked option  Also could use Term begins with or Term contains – these match vocabulary not meaning Can choose heading straight from results Hyperlink to more information about heading Click on heading to see subheadings

NC LIVE / KTLV 16 of 35 CINAHL Heading Record Shows location of term on the “tree”  MUST explode term to get narrower terms Major concept = main point of the article Specific subheadings (nursing, therapy, etc.) Process: select options desired, then select the proper Boolean option, and “Add.”

NC LIVE / JSK 17 of 35 Let’s Practice! Using the same nursing case that we had before (interventions school nurses can use to help prevent student obesity), let’s try some of our more advanced search techniques. What are the best subject headings for this search? What are some secondary headings related to them that might also be helpful?

NC LIVE / KTLV 18 of 35 Class Outline  Introduction (10 min)  CINAHL: Keyword Searching and Viewing Results (20 min)  CINAHL: Subject Heading and Journal Search (20 min)  CINAHL: Citation Searching (20 min)  Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition (5 min)  Metasearching in EBSCOhost (10 min)  Wrap-up (5 min)

NC LIVE / JSK 19 of 35 Searching by Cited References Now a feature in most EBSCO databases Search forward and backward in scholarly time by tracing items in bibliographies Finds articles that are similar because of citation links rather than keywords – like genealogy! Find these by browsing OR by searching

NC LIVE / KTLV 20 of 35 Cited Reference Browsing Start with results from a standard search. Some have a “Times Cited in this Database” link  Links to articles whose bibliographies are known 3 Options:  Cited references (parents)  Citing articles (children)  Related records (cousins)

NC LIVE / KTLV 21 of 35 Cited Reference Searching Tab on the Advanced Search Menu Form to enter information about starting article CINAHL searches for citing articles as default; can move to parents & cousins from here.

NC LIVE / JSK 22 of 35 Saving Results: The Folder Click the “Add to Folder” icon next to an article to temporarily save it within the database  These are remembered in further searches in one session Click “Folder has Items” to see saved articles Can print/save/email individual articles Also can save/email entire searches and collections of articles using MyEBSCOhost

NC LIVE / JSK 23 of 35 Let’s Practice! You probably found a few good articles for the obesity case that we’ve been using. Now let’s build our results set by finding articles that cite one or more of those, and/or are “related” to them.

NC LIVE / KTLV 24 of 35 Class Outline  Introduction (10 min)  CINAHL: Keyword Searching and Viewing Results (20 min)  CINAHL: Subject Heading Searching (20 min)  CINAHL: Citation Searching (20 min)  Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition (5 min)  Metasearching in EBSCOhost (10 min)  Wrap-up (5 min)

NC LIVE / JSK 25 of 35 Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition 550 scholarly full text journals  Abstracts and indexing for over 850 journals. Merriam-Webster's Medical Desk Dictionary Lexi-PAL Drug Guide, 1,300 generic drug patient education sheets with more than 4,700 brand names.

NC LIVE / jsk 26 of 35 CINAHL vs. Health Source Health Source Secondary resource 550 fulltext/850 indexed journals Standard EBSCO limits No controlled vocabulary Additional non-literature resources CINAHL Core nursing resource 597 fulltext/ 2,960 indexed journals Extensive limits CINAHL Subject Headings Literature only

NC LIVE / KTLV 27 of 35 Class Outline  Introduction (10 min)  CINAHL: Keyword Searching and Viewing Results (20 min)  CINAHL: Subject Heading Searching (20 min)  CINAHL: Citation Searching (20 min)  Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition (5 min)  Metasearching in EBSCOhost (10 min)  Wrap-up (5 min)

NC LIVE / KTLV 28 of 35 Metasearching in EBSCOhost All NC LIVE EBSCOhost databases can be cross- searched at once  Using EZ search from NC LIVE  Using EBSCOhost “Choose Databases” link Allows for using one search to look in lots of places  Use caution!

NC LIVE / KTLV 29 of 35 Metasearching Nursing Databases Choose “Databases” tab (top of screen)  Gets to list of all available databases in EBSCO Click boxes next to databases of interest  CINAHL, Pre-CINAHL, Health Source: Nursing, PsycInfo, Health Source: Consumer  Click “Continue” to get to search Only keyword searching is available Limits break out by database

NC LIVE / KTLV 30 of 35 Let’s Practice! Using the EBSCO metasearch, look for articles for our fictional nursing student (interventions school nurses can use to help prevent student obesity). What databases are most useful to search together? What new information did you find?

NC LIVE / KTLV 31 of 35 Class Outline  Introduction (10 min)  CINAHL: Keyword Searching and Viewing Results (20 min)  CINAHL: Subject Heading Searching (20 min)  CINAHL: Citation Searching (20 min)  Health Source: Nursing/Consumer Edition (5 min)  Metasearching in EBSCOhost (10 min)  Wrap-up (5 min)

NC LIVE /JSK 32 of 35 What Have We Learned? CINAHL is the primary database for clinical and academic literature in nursing and allied health CINAHL’s limits, subject headings, and journals indexes allow for powerful searching Cited article searching presents an added method for finding articles

NC LIVE / KTLV 33 of 35 What Else Have We Learned? About20% of journals in CINAHL are available with some full text Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition is also an option for nursing information You can search multiple EBSCO databases at once to expand options

NC LIVE / KTLV 34 of 35 Further (Chat) Questions What didn’t we talk about? What do you want to know more about? Where do you see these resources as useful? Please use the chat to discuss!
