3 NAEP: The National Assessment of Educational Progress NAEP is often called the Nation’s Report Card NAEP subjects tested this year include Math, Science, Reading Accommodations are provided so that as many students as possible can participate. NAEP was established by Congress in the late 60s In addition to results data, NAEP collects data on factors related to learning both inside and outside the classroom NAEP assesses a sample of schools and a sample of students in every state and jurisdiction through statistical sampling methods. 3

6 What is MyNAEP?  MyNAEP serves as your primary resource and action center for the NAEP assessment. – All preassessment activities are completed via MyNAEP. – The site contains confidential information, so all users will be prompted to accept a confidentiality agreement. – Requires a username and password. 6 www.mynaep.com

7 How do I register for the site?  Each school received a MyNAEP registration ID in a letter sent on 9/10. – Multiple school staff can use the registration ID to register for the website. – Select Please register, then enter the registration ID in the text box to get started. 7

8 How do I register for the site? – Make sure to select the correct role (school coordinator) during the registration process. – A username will be assigned to you, but you will create your own password. – The password must have: »8-14 characters »At least one of each: – uppercase letter – lowercase letter – numerical digit – special character (*!,~%@#$%?^+=&) »Sample password: KnightsR#1 8

9 Registering for multiple schools  If you are a school coordinator for more than one school, please follow these steps: – Register using one of the registration IDs assigned to you. – After successfully registering, use the “Register More Schools” option on the left-hand menu. – Enter each additional registration ID. 9

11 Provide School Information  Visit the Provide School Information page and confirm or enter the following information:  School & principal contact information  Student enrollment for the selected grade (included in the blue banner)  Dates for the following: »School adjourns for winter break »School returns from winter break »Last day of school Due: Date 11 Selected grade and assessment date available here in the banner

13 Submit Student List  For each school, NAEP collects a list of all students in the selected grade in order to draw a random sample of students to participate in the assessment.  The list must be in Excel.  E-Filing starts October 6 th.  Date Due is October 31 st.  After the sample has been drawn, the list of sampled students will be posted under Prepare for Assessment on December 8 th. 13 Due: October 31st

14 Student List Requirements  Your Excel student list should include the following information for each student in the selected grade: »State-level unique student ID *optional, no SSNs »First name »Middle name/initial *optional »Last name »Grade »Month of Birth »Year of Birth »Sex »Race/ethnicity »Student with disability status »English Language Learner status »NSLP participation status »Zip code 14

16 Prepare for Assessment-Not active until after December  An assigned NAEP representative will contact you in early December. – A preassessment packet will arrive in your school on December 2. – Shortly after Dec 2, the NAEP representative will contact you to discuss how to complete the Prepare for Assessment activities. – The NAEP representative will schedule a Pre-assessment Review Call. 16

17 Prepare for Assessment  The Prepare for Assessment menu includes 7 activities. – Only school coordinators have full access to this menu. – The list of sampled students will be posted under Prepare for Assessment on December 8 th. 17 List of sampled students available in the Demographic Data Report Due: Before the preassessment review call

18 Prepare for Assessment: How does it work?  Each activity has a section called Watch Tutorial and Get Started. – This section explains the information you will need to collect at your school before starting the MyNAEP activity. Review the tutorial and instructions, then select Finish to move on. 18

19 Prepare for Assessment: How does it work?  Each task should be completed in chronological order. – The menu serves as a “virtual checklist.” – Checkmarks will appear after activities are completed. – White checkmarks indicate information that will be confirmed by your NAEP representative during the preassessment review call. 19

20 Prepare for Assessment: How does it work?  These first 4 activities will be available on December 8. – Update List of Sampled Students – Include SD/ELL Students – Notify Parents – Manage Questionnaires  The rest will be available in January. – Submit Current Roster – Plan for Assessment Day – Encourage Participation 20

21 Prepare for Assessment: Update List of Sampled Students  Review the list of sampled students, and make the following updates.  Identify any students who are withdrawn, no longer enrolled, foreign exchange, not attending classes on campus, not in the selected grade.  Update any missing or incorrect demographic information.  Update classifications for students with disabilities and English Language Learners. 21

22 Prepare for Assessment: Include SD/ELL Students  Provide additional information about students with disabilities (SD) and English language learners (ELL).  How each student is assessed on the state assessment.  Testing accommodations that each student typically receives.  The IDEA category that best describes the student’s disability.  How long each student has been enrolled in U.S. schools (ELL).  Level of English proficiency (ELL). 22

24 Prepare for Assessment: Notify Parents  Download and distribute the parent/guardian notification letter template.  Customize text and include school letterhead.  Verify that parents/guardians of all sampled students were notified by entering the date the letter was sent.  Upload an electronic copy of the customized parent letter. 24

25 Prepare for Assessment: Manage Questionnaires  Enter the names and email addresses of questionnaire recipients, then send links to online questionnaires.  The school questionnaire is assigned to the principal.  Teachers at Grade 4 & 8 schools should be assigned teacher questionnaires.  Teachers of American Indian/Alaska Native students will be assigned an additional questionnaire. 25

27 Prepare for Assessment: Submit Current Roster  Create an Excel list of all currently enrolled students after January 1, 2015.  NAEP uses this list to give newly eligible students an opportunity to be sampled.  The list should include the following information for each student: State-level unique student ID First name Middle name *optional Last name Month of birth Year of birth 27

29 Prepare for Assessment: Plan for Assessment Day  Assign a location and time for each assessment session and answer logistics questions.  Determine how students and teachers will be notified.  Plan SD/ELL student accommodation logistics.  Let the NAEP representative know where to park at the school, how to check in, and what to do if there is a weather delay. 29

30 Prepare for Assessment: Encourage Participation  Meet with the school principal and ask if it’s possible to use recommended strategies for informing students and teachers about NAEP.  Includes short 5 minute videos for teachers and students about the importance of NAEP. 30

31 Support Assessment Activities  Print reminders about the scheduled NAEP assessment.  Student appointment cards  Teacher notification letter  List of sampled students (attachment for letters) Due: One week before the assessment 31

32 Wrap Up  You will receive an email in late spring that contains links for this activity.  Confirm that you have shredded the red storage envelope that contains all student reports.  Participate in an optional feedback survey. Due: Last day of school or by June 1 32
