27
The origin of bombing the Deity Handan
28
During the Lantern Festival, people in the Taitung area traditionally hold a unique activity called "Bombing Deity Handan."
29
Who is Handan? According to the folk tales, Handan was a general of the Shang dynasty in the twelfth century BC. After dying in a battle, he is said to have been appointed as treasurer of the heavenly world, with the power to bestow prosperity on those in the earthly world.
30
Why people want to bomb Handan? Because Handan is afraid of cold weather, people throw firecrackers at him when he goes out for inspection in order to keep him warm and win his good favor.
31
Today, it becomes a tradition of Taitung. The person who plays the role of Deity Handan tours the city on a sedan chair, facing the firecrackers thrown at him, protected only by a tree branch. http://www.eastcoast- nsa.gov.tw/en/upfile/16/85753.doc?PHPSESSID=9a4d211565a5c1493622de1643c4063 e
