8 Shatter the Silence of Sexual Violence! www.ShatteringTheSilence.org Myths and Facts About Sexual Assault MYTH: Most rapes and assaults are committed by a stranger FACT: The vast majority of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to us MYTH: Many people false report FACT: The false report rate for rape is less than 5% - the same as any other crime MYTH: Rape only happens to women FACT: Any person – man or woman – can become the victim of sexual violence MYTH: Victims should be crying FACT: Everyone reacts differently to trauma. Some people may be crying, angry, or even laughing after an assault MYTH: Weapons are typically used in sex crimes FACT: Most of the time, there are no weapons involved
