1 Sexual Abuse Prevention The Fraternity will not tolerate or condone any form of sexist or sexually abusive behavior on the part of its members, whether physical, mental or emotional. This is to include any actions which are demeaning to women or men including but not limited to date rape, gang rape or verbal harassment.

2 Definitions Sexual Harassment – the unwelcome, unreciprocated imposition of sexual attention, usually in the context of a relationship of unequal power. Rape – an act of sexual penetration with a person against his/her will. Both of these actions fall under the definition of sexual abuse.

3 Verbal Sexual Abuse Whistling and suggestive or insulting sounds. Jokes about sex or male/female specific traits. Sexual innuendos about your or someone else’s appearance. Sexual innuendos about your or someone else’s sexual activities.

4 Physical Sexual Abuse Obscene gestures. Staring suggestively. Assault. Any inappropriate touching. Brushing against someone else. Coerced sexual intercourse.

5 What can you do to prevent sexual abuse? Understand that you are responsible for your own actions as an individual and as a member of a group. Don’t assume that just because a woman dresses provocatively and/or flirts that she wants to engage in sexual activity. These actions may be misinterpreted. Don’t participate in or allow verbal harassment of women. Take an equal role in your relationships.

6 What can you do to prevent sexual abuse? Reject sexual stereotypes. Avoid excessive use of alcohol and drugs that will impair your judgment and interfere with effective communications. Don’t Rape. Sexual intimacy is a free exchange between two people. Intimidation, coercion and force have no place in sexual activity.

7 What can the chapter do? Eliminate sexist, degrading practices that signal to members that it is OK to demean and not respect others. Host educational programs on sex and sexual abuse. Take a leadership role in the Greek system to condemn sexual harassment and abuse.

8 Confront Situations If you observe someone sexually abusing another individual, stop them. Get help if necessary. If you have knowledge of a sexual abuse incident, inform a chapter officer and the chapter advisor. If the incident has merit, the president and advisor should contact the International Headquarters and the Police immediately.

9 How can I help a friend who has been sexually assaulted? Listen. Be there. But don’t be judgmental. Encourage them to seriously consider reporting the rape to law enforcement. Be patient. It will take your friend some time to deal with the crime. Encourage them to seek professional counseling to help cope with the incident. There is likely a Campus Counseling Center at College.
