OF MICE & MEN Chapter 3 1. What does Slim find “funny” about George and Lennie’s relationship? Slim finds it strange that two men would hang out all the time, taking care of each other like Lennie and George do.

OF MICE & MEN Chapter 3 2. How does George explain his relationship with Lennie to Slim? George explains that he and Lennie were both born in Auburn and knew his Aunt Clara. When his Aunt Clara died, George began to take care of Lennie.

OF MICE & MEN Chapter 3 3. Why did George stop teasing Lennie? What does this say about George’s character? He realized how gullible and helpless Lennie really was. What this shows about George’s character is that he is really a nice guy who cares about Lennie deep down inside, even if he often says the opposite.

OF MICE & MEN Chapter 3 4. Why did the girl in Weed claim that Lennie tried to rape her? Most likely, she thought that because Lennie wanted to pet her dress, he was going to hurt her.

OF MICE & MEN Chapter 3 5. Why does George tell Slim the story of what happened to them in Weed? George trusts Slim. Also, it helps George make a connection with someone other than Lennie and helps Slim understand that Lennie may be a big guy, but doesn’t have bad intentions.

OF MICE & MEN Chapter 3 6. Why doesn’t George want Lennie to sleep with the puppy in his bed? George is afraid that Lennie may accidentally hurt the puppy like he hurt the mice he carried.

OF MICE & MEN Chapter 3 7. How do the men like to spend their money and free time on the weekends? They spend their money and free time by visiting prostitution houses, drinking, and playing cards.

OF MICE & MEN Chapter 3 8. What is George’s first reaction to the offer Candy makes to him? What changes his mind? George immediately assumes Candy is making fun of them when he offers to help pay for the farm. George changes his mind because he realizes they could use the money and it would help make their dreams come true.

OF MICE & MEN Chapter 3 9. How did Candy get $250?
Candy hurt his hand during a work accident and was paid for it.

OF MICE & MEN Chapter 3 10. Why is Lennie smiling when Curley comes into the bunkhouse? He is still thinking about the possibility of having a farm and getting to tend the rabbits.

OF MICE & MEN Chapter 3 11. Why does Candy regret not shooting his dog himself? It was his own dog – he says he should have done it himself.

OF MICE & MEN Chapter 3 12. What happens as a result of Curley’s attack on Lennie? Lennie crushes Curley’s hand.

OF MICE & MEN Chapter 3 13. What does Slim make Curley agree to? Why does he make Curley do this? What does this say about Slim’s character? He makes him agree to tell people that his hand was crushed in a machine. He doesn’t want Lennie to get into trouble, especially since it was Curley who started the fight. Slim is clearly an honorable man who seeks to do the right thing.

OF MICE & MEN Chapter 3 14. How is Candy like his dog and why is the shooting of his dog so difficult on him? He is old and seen as useless and expendable. The death of his dog is hard for Candy because he probably sees it as symbolic of them getting rid of him, since he is also old and useless.
