“She leaned down and looked at his lifeless face and Liesel kissed her best friend, Rudy Steiner, soft and true on his lips. He tasted dusty and sweet. He tasted like the regret in the shadows of trees and in the glow of the anarchist’s suit collection. She kissed him long and soft, and when she pulled herself away, she touched his mouth with her fingers. Her hands were trembling, her lips were fleshy, and she leaned in once more, this time losing control and misjudging it. Their teeth collided on the demolished world of Himmel Street.” pg. 536 The meaning of this quote is the regret that Liesel for not realizing she was in love with her best friend earlier.

“Upon her arrival, you could still see the bite marks of snow on her hands and the frosty blood on her fingers. Everything about her was undernourished. Wirelike shins. Coat hanger arms. She did not produce it easily, but when it came, she had a starving smile.” pg.31 The personification in this quote is that you could still see the bite marks of snow on her hands.

“He was the crazy one who had painted himself black and defeated the world. She was the book thief without the words. Trust me, though, the words were on their way, and when they arrived, Liesel would hold them in her hands like the clouds, and she would wring them out like rain.” pg.80

“… it was raining on Himmel Street when the world ended for Liesel Meminger. The sky was dripping. Like a tap that a child has tried its hardest to turn off but hasn’t quite managed.” pg.497

The mood of the book is dark and sad. Sometimes there are parts that make you laugh, but other than that it’s mostly sad.
7
The most important theme of the book is abandonment. Liesel feels like she was abandoned by her mother and brother when she was put up for adoption and her brother died on the way there. She ends up having dreams about her brother dying and her mother doing nothing.
8
A symbol is the accordion, it gives Liesel hope and comfort that things will get better. When Liesel would read her book in the attic she felt that she was giving him what he gives her when he plays the accordion.
9
The tone just like the mood is very dark and sometimes different to understand. With Death being the narrorator of the book you really see how the book kind of has some secrets of its own.
10
The last time I saw her was red. The sky was like soup, boiling and stirring. In some places, it was burned. There were black crumbs, and pepper, streaked across the redness. Pg.12 The personification of this quote is talking about the way the sky looked when Werner died.
