 Think back to your research, and the presentations you viewed, as well as the other information presented in class.  How has the experience of researching and presenting context enhanced your understanding of the novel so far?  Part of growing as learners and people is understanding that one’s perspective of the world is not the only one. What experiences, books, school lessons have shaped your perspective of the world, and how has your perspective changed as you get older? Today you’ll need your journal, a loose sheet of paper, your novel, and a writing utensil. Entry Task 3/20

 Divide up the supporting claims.  With a partner (or group of 3), write out a full body paragraph using the supporting claim and evidence you find. Remember to include commentary and a concluding sentence. Open to the claims you wrote yesterday

 Opening sentence that introduces the idea of growing up.  Introduce and BRIEFLY summarize the passage.  Identify the specific literary element (without saying- a significant literary element in the passage)…  Transition to the thesis.  State thesis. As a group, write an introduction

A Passage Analysis Lens Intro Example… Difficult choices exist everywhere, and sometimes, making the easy choice leads to regret, and making the difficult choice is heroic. This regret, due to making the easy choice, is evident in a significant passage in Of Mice and Men when Candy says, “I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn’t of ought to let no stranger shoot my dog” (61). Here Candy is facing the regret of taking the easy route and letting another euthanize his dog. He regrets not being the last person his dog saw, and regrets not being there in his time of need. The situation itself was tough on Candy, but the loss of his best friend was nothing compared to the regret- that will be a part of his personae for the rest of his life- for making the easy and selfish choice. His regret, and how it influences George, provides insight into the overall message that a true hero is one who makes the difficult choice in an impossible situation.

 Track setting details, conflict, characterization and any symbolism you notice. HW: Read Chapters 15 and 16
