AUT UNIVERSITY - TE WANANGA ARONUI O TAMAKI MAKAU RAU SMOKEFREE NURSES AOTEAROA / NEW ZEALAND MANUKAU INSTUTUE OF TECHNOLOGY Smoking cessation education in undergraduate nursing programmes Claire Doole Grace Wong Evelyn Hikuroa Gil Stokes School of Health Care Practice, Nursing, AUT Smokefree Nurses Aotearoa/New Zealand, AUT Nursing and Health Studies, MIT Tobacco-free Aotearoa Conference 2012

Overview Key issues What did we do? Have we lifted our game? Conclusions / recommendations

Background A key success indicator for implementing ABC approach is: “100% of all undergraduate courses related to health care have implemented ABC training into their curricula” (Jenkins, 2009, p.19) Registered nurses identify Schools of Nursing as critical agents for changes in the culture and practice of nurses Nursing students in their final year of training can become Quit Card providers

Research questions How many undergraduate nursing degree programmes include smoking cessation education in their curricula? What smoking cessation interventions are taught? Where in the curricula these taught? How are they assessed?

Methods Online survey of all undergraduate Schools of Nursing (n=16) Heads of School were invited to forward an invitation and survey link to staff involved in smoking cessation education Multiple responses from individual Schools were collated to provide individual School profiles

Results 2012 n 2009 n SCHOOLS SENT TO 1617 SCHOOLS RESPONDING 14 INDIVIDUAL RESPONDENTS* 2436 The number of respondents per school varied from 1 to 8 Not all respondents completed all sections of the survey There were inconsistencies in responses between multiple respondents from within schools Multiple responses from with individual schools were aggregated to provide a school profile

Results 2012 5 AsABCChange Theory SCHOOLS AWARE OF 111311 SCHOOLS TEACHING 5137 13 Schools answered these questions All were aware of and teaching ABC Eleven were aware of both the 5As and Change Theory. Five and seven respectively were teaching them No mention of Alan Carr method, nor were schools teaching any other methods

TYPE OF ASSESSMENT ABC online12 Examination 5 Assignment 4 Clinical observation 4 Group project 2 Other 2 Twelve schools responded to this question All included some form of assessment Students register to become Quit Card providers in eleven schools (however only eight teach ABC in Year 3) Eleven schools included NRT (2008: n= 9) Total hours taught ranged from 1.5 to 5+ hours per school Schools indicated students did self-directed learning - difficult to quantify

Discussion Limitations The survey was not necessarily distributed to all relevant staff Responses reflect the knowledge of individual staff members and thus are affected by the availability of knowledge about the curriculum Because of inconsistencies in responses within schools it cannot be said that ABC is applied universally by all those with responsibility for teaching smoking cessation

Conclusion; recommendations Game lifted!!! Results have improved since 2009 when - two schools did not provide any smoking cessation education eight were teaching ABC Schools need a more consistent internal approach All Schools of Nursing need to provide coordinated smoking cessation education in accordance with current best practice guidelines Acknowledgements: Staff in Schools of Nursing who participated Nick Garrett, Biostatistician/Senior Research Fellow at AUT University
