White-Bellied Spider Monkey Ateles Belzebuth

Common Name- White Bellied Spider monkey Scientific Name- Ateles Belzebuth Location- Northeastern portion of South America.

Size Diet- Mainly fruits but also eats seeds, leaves, and sometimes dead wood. Size- Weight ranges from 5.9 to 10.4 kg. body length that ranges from 42 to 50 cm

Housing They live in the upper canopy of the rainforest and can be found to up to 1,800 m. high in the trees!

Climate Needed These spider monkeys require large tracts of moist evergreen forests, and prefer undisturbed primary rainforest.

Reproduction Reproduction Reproduction: Every 2 to 4 years and usually 1 offspring Gestation: 210 to 225 days or about 7 months

Community These monkeys are group animals and can live in a group from 20 up to 40!

Endangered The two main reasons for the reduction of the species is from hunting and chopping down trees, destroying their homes The White Bellied Spider Monkey was put on endangered list in 1985.

Population Population of the White-Bellied Spider Monkey has decreased 30% in the past 3 generations.

Conservation Efforts There are a number of protected areas in Columbia that try to protect the monkeys. Organizations trying to protect the monkeys consists of the UNEP and WCMC.
