Wastewater Treatment and Permit Compliance

 Document Permit issue and expiration date  Document permit requirements  If discharge to city, review Sewer Use Ordinance requirements

 Review Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMR) requirements  Review Signatory Authorization Form requirements  Review control instrument calibration records requirements  Spill/Slug Control Plan (up to date?)  Sewer line drawings (up to date?)

 Review certified operator requirements  Review all applicable records (keep for 3 years)  Operations Log Book – Record daily operational parameters at least 3 time per day. Include calibration records, maintenance performed, and any atypical operational issues and corrective action taken.

 Cylindrical device to filter out large particles and proteins out of waste stream.  Mesh Screen: Slot width typically 0.02” – 0.03”  Back Doctor Blade: On back of screen - forms a seal that forces water through the screen.  Front Doctor Blade: Must be tight against the screen to remove solids.  Water Level Control: To rotate screen only when there are solids to be screened.

 Flow: 2 gpm per square foot surface area.  Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) = 45 – 60 minutes, including recycle flow  Solids Loading: 4 - 8 lbs TSS per hour per square foot surface area.  Sludge generation: Volume dependent on influent loading and % solids.  Recycle Water Flow Rate >= 0.5 x Influent Flow Rate (gpm )

 Based on manufacturers specifications and flows and loadings versus design capacity;  Without chemical treatment: approximately 50 - 60% O&G removal;  With chemical treatment: approximately 70 – 80% O&G removal;  Approximately 50% solids removal;  Approximately 30% BOD removal (particulate BOD).

DAF White Water

 Whitewater system performance (pressure in air saturation tank and recycle water flow rate);  Optimize skimmer speed to thicken sludge;  Optimize water level on beach with weir adjustment to thicken sludge;  Preventive maintenance per manufacturer specifications;  Dewater and clean cell thoroughly to minimize the potential of septic sludge bottom layer.

 Recycle water is drawn from the effluent of the float cell.  Minimum recycle flow is half of the influent flow to the cell.  Use a flow meter to monitor this flow  Recycle pump wear can reduce flow.

 Reduce discharge volume ◦ Reduces costs for purchasing and treating water ◦ City charges / surcharges ◦ Leaks / Single Pass Cooling / Cleaning methods ◦ Water reuse and recycling  Reduce contaminants ◦ Dry clean up ◦ Use only the amount you need! (cleaners) ◦ Reuse / Extend the life of brines

Hint: YOURS!  Keep current copies of all permits and plans (WebEMS – Permit and Controlled Document Sections)  Summarize requirements (WebEMS – Monitoring Data Section)  Use WebEMS Calendar and SAP for reminders  Designate requirements to responsible team members  Assure compliance (audit at least annually)  Renew permits on time

 Advanced Web-Based Technical Training Program  Available to You ! Just ask. rolandbeem@smithfieldfoods.com
