1. Tax – charge against a person or property. 2. Representation – someone that is the voice for the people. 3. Colonies – Land owned by another country. 4. Colonists – Residents of a land owned by another country.

1. By 1732, there were 13 colonies. a.North Carolina was an original colony! 2. People in these colonies were called “colonists”. 3. Britain owned these 13 colonies and began taxing these colonies with harsh taxes by starting the Townshend Acts in 1767. 4. The colonists did not like this because they felt they did not have enough representation.

1. In June 1767, the British government passed the Townshend Acts. 2. These acts stated that the British government would tax any good (such as sugar, tea, and paper) being imported into the colonies. 3. The British government enforced these taxes by sending British tax collectors called “customs commissioners.” 4. In places like Boston, the Bostonians disliked these commissioners so much so that they would treat them poorly. Once, they tied down a commissioner, poured tar over him and covered him in feathers. 5. In 1768, the commissioners feared for their safety so much that the British government had to send British troops for the commissioner’s safety. 6. Boston now was more frustrated and angry by the presence of the British.

1. The colonists in the Americas no longer considered themselves British. 2. They began to feel very frustrated and began to fight off any British ties. 3. Tensions would thicken for the next 30-40 years after the 13 colonies were set up in 1732.

1. This was meant as a slogan that summarized the feelings of the colonists living in the Americas. 2. As we discussed earlier, the colonists were being taxed any and all things (such as tea and sugar) being shipped out of the colonies. 3. They felt unheard because they had no one to voice their opinions to the King of England. 4. This slogan would become a major cause to an upcoming war we will soon learn about.
