CHILDRENS ACT 1989 Social services must work together to provide services and support for children and young people up to the age of 18. Main points Protect children who are at risk – the safety of the child is PARAMOUNT Children have the right to make their views heard Children’s wishes must be taken in to consideration Support should be provided to keep families together where this is at all possible.

CHILDRENS ACT 1989 What services should work together? What must local authorities do if someone reports a child being abused? What is a child protection register? What type of emergency support can be provided? Has anyone heard of Sarah’s Law?

CHILDREN ACT 2004 This was designed to strengthen the original act by:- Appointing a Director if Children’s Services in all local authorities. Create an information database so that all services can share information. Introducing a new law “Every Child Matters”. Now complete the case study at the top of page 267 on Megan.

OTHER LEGISLATION Stick in the photocopy of the laws from page 267 and highlight key points. Who is this? She made sure that Every Child Matters.

EVERY CHILD MATTERS Five key areas Be healthy Stay safe Enjoy and achieve Make a positive contribution Achieve economic well-being. ALL organisations must work together to achieve this. Can you think of examples in school of how this is encouraged?
