Johnson/Mellon Cadre Workshop New Technology for Teaching and Learning Closing remarks by Hayden Porter Daniel Professor of Computer Science and Mellon Grant Director Furman University

Your Responsibilities u Consult with and assist departmental faculty in the development of effective course materials that employ new information technology u Help other students as they use new technology for courses and projects, and as they use on-line resources u Most importantly! –Be courteous and patient as you work with faculty and students

Your Responsibilities u Assist other Cadre Fellows when they need your advise or expertise u As time permits, develop your own area of expertise to round out the Cadre skill mix –Talk with us if you need help getting started u Maintain an on-line portfolio documenting your accomplishments -- accessible to prospective employers or others interested in what you’ve accomplished

Your Responsibilities u Learn to view problems through others perspectives and offer solutions that are understandable from their perspectives –Don’t force others to do it your way –Adapt to their way -- that is the mark of true competence and maturity and it will foster great interpersonal experiences

Your Responsibilities u Foster in your department open discussion about and general involvement in your activities –Use the technology to foster involvement –Make it easy for folks to communicate u Enable the creativity of the faculty and students you work with –You’ll find their enjoyment and yours will grow rapidly

Your Responsibilities u Work 5 - 10 hours per week on Cadre Fellow activities –Payment every two weeks @ $7.00 per hour –Fill out time card obtained from your mentor –Have card signed by your faculty mentor –Turn in card to Johnson Center for Engaged Learning--provide me with photocopy of card –Each week post a log of your activities in support of the Cadre program--this is an important requirement and it will be checked

Your Responsibilities u Maintain your Cadre Web page-- its purposes are to facilitate faculty contact with you and sumarize all your activities as a Fellow u Contents of this page will include: –Your statement of your role as Cadre Fellow in your department –Schedule of times each week you have reserved to meet with faculty, students, and other Fellows –Links to a discussion group to foster dialogue in your department –Weekly logs of your activities –Portfolio links to pages & documents you’ve created

Your Responsibilities u Visit the Cadre Discussion Group regularly and actively contribute to the discussions –Try to post useful information at least twice a week to make the discussion group current and useful to all u Help other Fellows when you have the expertise and post to the Cadre Discussion Group questions about problems you encounter or solutions to problems solved u Respond promptly to any questions or requests posted by the Program Director

Your Responsibilities u Attend an hour and a half meeting once a month to discuss with other Cadre Fellows and the Program Director how the program is impacting your department(s) –What new/unforeseen issues are arising? –What resources are needed that are not presently available? –What needs to be done to make the program more effective? –Share the most exciting things you’ve done.

Concluding Remarks u Cadre Program is to be self documenting –As appropriate, discussions and all course materials should be posted on-line –Your portfolio will be very useful to you as you look for employment -- it will also help us show the Mellon and Johnson Foundations that this program is highly effective -- so please be vigilant in maintaining your logs and links up- to-date
