1
Atom – Basic unit of matter. Made of: Protons – positive (+) charge Neutrons – neutral (no) charge Electrons – negative (-) charge Atomic Number – The number of protons in the nucleus
2
Element – All of the atoms in a substance are alike. (Gold, Silver, Copper, Aluminum) Compound – Different atoms or elements combine to make a substance. (Salt, water, sugar, plastics)
3
Valence electrons – Electrons in the outer shell. electron neutron proton Ions – Charged atoms Has either extra or lack of electrons. Free electrons – Electrons not around the nucleus any longer This is what we see as ELECTRICITY!
4
Static Electricity – (electrostatic energy) When there are no movement of electrons from one object to another. (Magnetism) Uses: Car painting Air Cleaning Filters Power coating Abrasive Paper Electrostatic Printing (Photocopy) http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/photocopier1.htm
