International Rugby During 1905, the New Zealand Rugby team toured the Home Nations of the United Kingdom, the first team from a ‘colony’ to do so.New Zealand Rugby team Home NationsUnited Kingdom Just before the kick off of each game the New Zealand Rugby Team performed a strange dance ritual ! The ritual was an ancient ‘Maori’ war dance. The Maoris were the ‘indigenous’ people of New Zealand. It has become tradition for New Zealand to perform this ritual before every international game they play. It is now commonly known as The Haka.

3. Gloucester vs New Zealand At Kingsholm 1 st live experience of the ‘Haka’ for the people of Gloucester. Most players in the New Zealand team were Maoris. The Maoris also liked to have tattoos on their faces. Imagine facing these men doing the Haka, shouting at you, dancing in front of you, and with tattoos on their faces!.
