Toulouse-Lautrec: -wealthy French family -after breaking his legs he became cripples and his growth was stunted. -he left home to live in Paris -lived a Bohemian lifestyle (love, freedom, Toulouse-Lautrec left home to live in Paris and associated with the social outcasts of society – was quite a drinker and lived in a brothel for a period of time About his Work: -He captured scenes of Paris’ clubs, such as the “Moulin Rouge” -his paintings look like photographs that are cropped -he painted the Paris nightlife / women -Uses harsh artificial light – shows the outward happiness but inner sadness of this nightlife Exaggerates, creates caricatures of real people to capture their features -known for creating the first advertising posters

About this work: -Outward appearance – a nude couple kissing, viewed as romantic -actually shows a couple sent to Hell in Dante’s poem, Inferno -sculpture is of Francesca and Paolo. Francesca who fell in love with her husband’s brother, Paolo Malatesta. Francesca’s husband learns of their love affair and kills them both. The couple are actually shown NOT touching as they are sent to hell for their sin of infidelity – punishment, always wanting to be together but not being able to touch The Artist: -Rodin was admired for creating art that captured emotion through its incompletion Technical: -marble -in-the-round -smooth and rough texture
