If a student is not registered with our program, but you suspect they may have a significant learning difficulty, when and how should you refer them to SSWD?
What about students who appear to have a
mobility impairment or some other type of
disability?
Sample role play: I wanted to let you know that there are offices on campus that could help you obtain more information about your own learning attributes and help piece together what may be some reasons for your difficulties with writing/reading. One in particular is the Services to Students with Disabilities (SSWD) office. They have a form with questions which students can pick up and fill out if they are curious about further investigating their learning difficulties. Answering the questions helps the student reflect on their own learning experiences. Once completed, the student can return the form, and an LD Specialist will review it to determine whether or not further assessment is appropriate. I would also encourage you to visit the drop-in tutoring labs through the English (or other) department. If you feel the desire to speak with a counselor about your learning experiences, I wanted to let you know that SSWD is a great resource. Remember, if you decide to drop by SSWD and fill out their questionnaire, it doesn’t mean you necessarily have a learning disability, it just means you are seeking more information that can potentially help you learn more effectively. More information can never be a bad thing.
