5. Teaching Instructions Students remember information better and longer if they are actively involved in processing the information. Having them look at a handout or even reading a handout most often is not enough for students to internalize the concepts. The students will benefit greatly by completing the FRAME as you discuss the concepts and it doesn’t take that much longer than just reading and discussing the handout. Photocopy student information handout and FRAME so each is on separate paper, double sided. Distribute the information handout and FRAME to the students Use a Smart board or Overhead of the FRAME to guide students Discuss the rational for the information and complete the ‘Key Topic’ and ‘is about’ sections as a class. Have students briefly skim the handout to note how many main ideas are addressed (10). Point out that there are 10 ‘Main idea’ sections on the FRAME, one for each of the points. Go back to the first point and have students record the point in the ‘Main Idea’ section. Have students record key information, examples, or plans for this idea as you discuss it with the class. Move on to point two. Have students record the idea and make notes as you discuss the idea. Continue for all ten ideas. Discuss with the students ‘what makes a successful study plan’. Have them record the key points in the section provided. Review the SQR4 study strategy with the students. Have them record key points on their Frame. Finish up by completing the ‘So What’ section. Discuss why this is important and how it will help.
