3. British History… January 20 th 1936 Edward VIII ascends to the throne. He was popular because: He had visited many parts of the country hit by the economic depression. He was genuinely concerned for the underprivileged. He was known as a brave soldier in the First World War.

4. Edward VIII 10 December 1936 Edward wished to marry American Wallis Simpson. Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin advised him that the British people would not accept her Faced with losing the woman he loved, Edward chose instead to abdicate. He married Wallace Simpson in France in June 1937. They became the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
