3 3 Jonah 1:4 “But the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up.” The Anger of the God of Grace 3

4 4 Jonah 1:4 God is Sovereign over all of Creation! The Storm Hurled: “To send or thrust with great vigor” Mighty Tempest Tempest: “Violent Storm” 4

5 5 Jonah 1:4 Jeremiah 23:19-20 The whirling tempest of God’s wrath! – –God is serious about sin! – –His wrath is what we all deserve! In this chapter, the mighty tempest will also be used by God to be an instrument of mercy. 5

6 6 Jonah 1:5 “Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep” 6

7 7 Jonah 1:5 Sin not only impacts those personally involved, it makes an impact on those around us. Idols have no power to save. Psalm 115 HOW CAN WE NOT GO AND PREACH THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS? 7 7

8 8 Jonah 1:5 The Flight from God is always down. – –Down to Joppa – –Down into the ship – –Every step we take away from God is a step towards death. Running from God is exhausting work! Proverbs 13:15 8

9 9 Jonah 1:6 “So the captain came and said to him, “What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish.” Jonah is called out for his lack of care and is asked to do what everybody has already been doing. 9

10 10 Jonah 1:7 “And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us. So they cast lots, and lot fell on Jonah.”” Casting Lots Used in ancient world to determine divine will The lots were cast and it fell on Jonah Proverbs 16:33 10

11 11 Jonah 1:8 “Then they said to him, “Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?”” This will be the first time we’ve heard from Jonah. 11

12 12 Jonah 1:9 “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” – –Such Irony! – –Jonah preaches to these idol worshiping sailors! 12

13 13 Jonah 1:9 What does Jonah proclaim? – –I fear the LORD – –He’s the God of all Creation 13

14 14 Jonah 1:10 “Then the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.” The sailors knew that Jonah was to blame for this storm that threatens their lives! 14

15 15 Jonah 1:11 “Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us? For the sea grew more and more tempestuous.” It’s a merciful question! 15

16 16 Jonah 1:12 “He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.” What did Jonah need to do? To repent of His sins and hurl himself into the merciful arms of God! 16

17 17 Jonah 1:13 “Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.” – –The sailors had compassion on Jonah! – –Our God is Sovereign. Proverbs 16:9 Isaiah 46:9-10 17

18 18 Jonah 1:14 “Therefore they called out to the LORD, “O LORD, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, O LORD, have done as it pleased you.”” These pagan worshipers are now crying out to the one and true God for mercy! 18

19 19 Jonah 1:15 “So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.” Obediently, they follow God. 19

20 20 Jonah 1:16 “Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows.” These idol worshipers are now God-fearing men! 20

21 21 Jonah 1:17 “And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.” God is merciful to Jonah! 21

22 22 Jonah 1:4-17 WE ARE JONAH 22

23 23 Jonah 1:4-17 Application Are you running from God today? Hurl yourself into His merciful arms today! 23
