1 Lesson 2 – Metals and Alloys
Chapter 4

2 An alloy is a mixture made of two or more elements that has the properties of metal. In every alloy, at least one of the elements is a metal. Alloys are used much more than pure metals because they are generally stronger and less likely to react with air or water. Iron for example is often alloyed with one or more other elements to make steel. The properties of an alloy can differ greatly from those of its individual elements.

3 Making and Using Alloys
Many alloys are made by melting metals and mixing them together in carefully measured amounts. Alloys have a variety of uses. Bronze, brass, sterling silver and solder are just a few examples of other kinds of alloys. Alloys are used to make items ranging from plumbing materials and sprinkler systems to tableware and doorknobs. Many parts of an aircraft are made of metals and metal alloys.
