7 habits of highly effective people
2
FOUNDATION Sow a thought, reap an action; Sow an action, reap a habit;
Sow a habit, reap a character; Sow a character, reap a destiny. - Samuel Smiles

STEPHEN COVEY “Our first energies should go to our own character development, which is often invisible to others, like the roots that sustain great trees. As we cultivate the roots, we will begin to see the fruits.” In 1976 Stephen Covey started to study the leadership styles and their change in 200 years – he started with the year when the Declaration of Independence was signed, he studied all the books about leadership styles, autobiographies etc. and came to a very interesting result…..shift from character (roots) to personality (tree), the point of this teaching is to focus on the roots or character, because unless the tree is standing on a strong roots it will eventually fall down. S. Covey: Although image, techniques and skills can influence our success, the real source of lasting effectiveness lies in strong character – the roots.

FROM DEPENDENCE TO INTERDEPENDENCE
This graph explains the relationships between the habits and their logical graduality. It shows how with inhabiting first 3 habits we can come from being dependent to independent, which is the goal of many people. Stephen Covey thinks further and he thinks our goal should be to become interdependent. This is WHY: Dependent people need others to get what they want. Independent people can get what they want through their own effort. Interdependent people combine their own efforts with the efforts of others to achieve their greater success.” “There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.” Beverly Sills

HABIT 1: BE PROACTIVE “When we can no longer change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” Viktor Frankl Viktor Frankl – he is a famous psychiatrist and philosopher who was in a concentration camp where they made experiments on his body. When he was lying on the table he was imagining how he is teaching this experience to his students after he will escape the concentration camp.
6
HABIT 1: BE PROACTIVE I am a product of my circumstances >> REACTIVE BEHAVIOR I am a product of my choices >> PROACTIVE BEHAVIOR
7
REACTIVE BEHAVIOR Reactive people allow outside influences (moods, feeling and circumstances) to control their response.
8
PROACTIVE BEHAVIOR Proactive people PAUSE to allow themselves the FREEDOM TO CHOOSE their response based on PRINCIPLES and DESIRED RESULTS.
9
HABIT 1: BE PROACTIVE Circle of influence includes the things you can affect directly. Circle of concern includes things you care about. Proactive people focus on things they can influence and on expanding the circle of influence (f. e. your choices, your happiness, your education, …) Reactive people focus on things they cant control and this way lose their time they could spend in circle of influence (f.e. your past mistakes, global economy, weaknesses of other people)
10
Habit 2: begin with the end in mind
“No one can go back and make a brand-new start; But anyone can start from here and make a brand-new end.” Dan Zadra
11
HABIT 2: BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND
INEFFECTIVE: I live by DEFAULT. EFFECTIVE: I live by DESIGN. HABIT 2: BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND The principle of this habit is that the MENTAL CREATION precedes THE PHYSICAL CREATION. That is why it is important to have a personal mission statement, clear goals and live by it. Covey compares it to a building: without a precise architectural blueprint, you could never built anything that would last for a long time….
12
CREATE AND LIVE BY A PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT
You should think about your mission statement as your personal constitution by which you make all decisions for your life. Highly effective people shape their future instead of letting other people, their culture, or their circumstances determine it.
13
HABIT 2: BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND
BENEFITS OF PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT Provides focus Clarifies what is important to you Helps you design your life instead of having it designed for you Guides your day-to-day decisions Gives you a greater sense of meaning and purpose
14
HABIT 2: BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND
IDENTIFY YOUR KEY ROLES Role 1: Journalist Role 2: Traveler/Explorer Role 3: Humphrey Fellow Role 4: Partner Role 5: Daughter/Sister Role 6: Friend Identify your key roles and define a legacy you want to leave in each of your key roles. Imagine your 80th birthday celebrations. What would you like the key people in your life say about you?? 2. IDENTIFY LONG-TERM GOALS What 2 or 3 key things could you do to help make these tribute statements reality?
15
Habit 3: put first things first
“Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least.” Time management habit! Busyness doesn’t equal effectivness.
16
HABIT 3: PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST
INEFFECTIVE: I put URGENT things first. EFFECTIVE: I put IMPORTANT things first.
17
TIME MATRIX We have to focus on Quadrant 2!!, Live north of the line
18
HABIT 3: PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST
PLAN WEEKLY! Review missions and roles Choose big rocks Schedule the week Our lecturer said that if we wanted to start using just one thing from all the work shop, it should be the weekly plans! We should dedicate at least 20-3O minutes for planning our week before the week starts. 1 step: review our missions and roles in 3 areas – work, personal relationships and yourself. 2) choose big rocks – you have to ask yourself what is the most important thing you can do this week that will have the biggest impact on your future (for each role?, ideally only one task per role per week), 3) schedule the week – first big rocks, then other activities, you should never schedule more thank 60% of your time
19
Habit 4: think win-win “What do we live for if it’ s not to make life less difficult for each other?” George Eliot The Habit of mutual benefit
20
HABIT 4: THINK WIN-WIN INEFFECTIVE: There is only so much, and the more you get, the less there is for me. >> WIN – LOSE EFFECTIVE: There is plenty out there for everyone, and more to spare. >> WIN – WIN Effective, long-term relationships require mutual respect and mutual benefit. Win- win person thinks: Let’ s find a solution that works for both of us. Win –lose: I will beat you no matter what. There are also people who thin Lose –win: I always get stepped on. Lose-lose: If I’m going down, you’ re going down wth me. Win-lose and lose-win situations will most of the time end up as lose-lose situation at the end.
21
HABIT 4: THINK WIN-WIN BALANCE COURAGE & CONSIDERATION Courage – Willingness and ability to speak your thoughts and feelings. Consideration – Willingness and ability to seek and listen to others’ thoughts and feelings with respect. Balance courage and consideration means that if it’ s needed to be said, say it, but say it nicely.
22
Habit 5: seek first to understand, then to be understood
“Listen, or your tongue will make you deaf.” Native American proverb `
23
HABIT 5: SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD
INEFFECTIVE: I listen with the intent to reply. EFFECTIVE: I listen with the intent to understand. The most important thing to learn from this habit is to listen emphatically. S. Covey says that emphaty is the fastest form of human communication. Emphatic listening is much harder then it seems. When we want to practice it, we shouldn’t give advice, ask questions, explain other person’ s behaviour or judge, we should basically repeat what other person says in our words.! We should listen emphatically in situation when there is – high emotion, you must get to the heart of the issue, and so on…then the person will open up… UNDERSTAND DOESN’ T MEAN TO AGREE!
24
“The enemy of the best is the good.” Voltaire
Habit 6: synergize “The enemy of the best is the good.” Voltaire The habit of creative cooperation.
25
1 + 1 = 1, 5 1 + 1 = 3…..100 HABIT 6: SYNERGIZE
INEFFECTIVE: It’ s either your way or my way, or a compromise. 1 + 1 = 1, 5 EFFECTIVE: Together we can create a better way, a higher way. 1 + 1 = 3…..100 Principle: The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. When we learned about this habit, at first they let us watch a video that started with the music of a jazz band – at first just one instrument, then more and more and when all the instruments were playing it was perfect. Covey said that music is a great example of synergy – every instrument is bringing new tones, new textures, new feeling and richness to the whole piece. SYNERGY – creative cooperation, the essence of synergy – value the differences!
26
Habit 7: sharpen the saw “To keep the lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.” Mother Teresa
27
HABIT 7: SHARPEN THE SAW INEFFECTIVE: I focus only on getting the golden eggs EFFECTIVE: I nurture the goose that lays the golden eggs Principle: to maintain and increase effectivness, we must renew ourselves in body, heart, mind and soul.
28
HABIT 7: SHARPEN THE SAW 4 DIMENSIONS: PHYSICAL SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL
MENTAL SPIRITUAL We have to renew ourselves regularly in 4 dimensions.
